Monday Madness: Favorite Hero/Villain Duo

This Monday Madness, vote for your favorite hero/villain duos! The hero of any TV show, whether comic-book-based, sitcom, or procedural drama, always faces opposition in the pursuit of his/her goals. Often, that opposition comes from the people around our hero. But sometimes, one opposing person stands out from the crowd. They may be a twisted version of our hero, or just amazing at being evil. But you can be sure that an epic battle (of wits, weapons, or fisticuffs) is about to begin!

The pairs below are some of the more popular hero/villain duos, along with several nominated by readers of this blog. Which are your favorites? Go forth and vote!

Also, this poll is not as limited as previous ones – feel free to include older shows and villains who aren’t around for very long – just be sure to nominate ones that make an impression!

The winners of last week’s poll are here.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 5 of your favorite TV hero/villain duos. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will win!

I had a hard time coming up with duos for this list, and I know there are many more epic heroes and villains out there! As always, you can cast write-in ballots by leaving a comment, and if I receive several nominations, I may add them to the poll! Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Stay tuned – I have something special in mind for the rest of April and May!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 12AM April 7th.

Favorite TV Couples Ultimate Showdown

Back when we did our favorite TV couples polls (with realistic and speculative divisions) last spring, I promised that in the fall, we’d have the winners from those polls face each other in an ultimate showdown. Friends, that time is now. The top 20 couples in each of the two polls have joined together with 10 newbie wild card competitors to determine which couples are truly TV’s top 10!

Since this poll will take place over Thanksgiving (for us Americans), I’ll keep the poll open through the end of the month, giving you a full 15 days to get the word out for your favorite couples. You can vote for up to 10 couples, but choose carefully, as you only get to vote once! (Oh, and be sure to enter our Friends giveaway!)

Unlike most of our polls, you can’t nominate other couples, since this is based on the results of two previous polls. Even for our ten wild card additions, I only choose couples that did not appear in the previous polls. Some were overlooked, some are newer shows or newer couples, but I chose 5 from speculative shows and 5 from shows without speculative elements: Brad and Jane from Happy Endings, Nick and Jess from New Girl, Auggie and Annie from Covert Affairs, Troy and Britta from Community, Daniel and Kate from Perception, Oliver and Laurel from Arrow, John and Rachel from Alphas, Fargo and Holly from Eureka, Nathan and Audrey from Haven, and Adama and Roslin from Battlestar Galactica.

Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, Pinterest, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Our toolbar at the bottom of the page has lots of quick links to help you share this post, or you can mouse over the image above!

Without further ado, choose your favorite 10 out of the 50 couples below! Poll will close Friday night, November 30th.

News: Burn Notice Gets Season 7, NCIS: LA Launches Mobile Spinoff, Nikita Moves Back to 8PM Fridays

Personal note: Windows failed to load on my computer Monday, leading to frantic attempts to fix and use of super-slow old computers – and no new posts on this blog. I reinstalled Windows several hours ago, and have been working to get my computer back to normal (fortunately most stuff was backed up). In the meantime, TV news kept coming in! Here are some highlights:

Burn Notice has been renewed for a 13-episode season 7! This is notably shorter than its usual 16-18 episode seasons, but it has not been announced as the final season (there was some speculation that it would). The second half of season 6 resumes today at 9/8c with a special two-hour premiere.

NCIS: Los Angeles is preparing a special two-part episode to launch a potential spin-off  series. The potential series would focus on a mobile NCIS unit that travels around the country solving Navy-related crimes. This two-part-planted-pilot has become a mainstay in the franchise. NCIS: Los Angeles had one on the original NCIS, while NCIS itself was a spin-off of JAG. Expect the episode to give a good feel of what the potential show would look like, but there will likely be some tweaking (on NCIS: Los Angeles, Hetty replaced Macy when the show started the following fall; on NCIS, Kate Todd replaced Vivian Blackadder).

Nikita is moving back to its old 8PM timeslot on November 30 and will be followed by Arrow repeats. The show has struggled in its 9PM slot against increased scripted competition (Grimm, Fringe, and CSI:NY all also air at that time). This week will be its final 9PM outing, and then it will take two weeks off – for the two-hour season final of America’s Next Top Model, and for Thanksgiving weekend.

FX has released the first trailer for its Cold War spy drama, The Americans, starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. Take a look:

Renew/Cancel News: USA Cancels Common Law, Fairly Legal, and Political Animals; Close to Renewing Burn Notice

The news that USA Network canceled both freshman Common Law and sophomore Fairly Legal shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since several actors from the shows moved on to other things after the network let their contract options expire. Since I don’t watch either show, the news doesn’t bother me. I just hope USA finds some great shows to replace them. USA also chose not to put up a second season of limited-series show Political Animals.

No word yet on the fate of Necessary Roughness, but apparently Burn Notice is very close to a seventh season renewal. Season 6 resumes November 8 with a two-hour episode. Also, production has started on new series Graceland.

Fox recently reduced the 13-episode order for midseason comedy The Goodwin Games to 7. The network says the reduction is due to scheduling, not the show’s quality. It will likely air after Ben and Kate finishes its 19-episode season.

Monday Madness: Favorite Characters Over 50

This week, Monday Madness returns with a look at those TV characters who buck the 18-49 demographic trend and prove that interesting characters make for great TV, no matter their age!

One important note: this poll does not include characters who have lived for many decades (or even centuries), but through supernatural means still look and act like 20somethings. So no vampires, Alphas who never age, or characters frozen in time for 28 years, unless they were 50+ beforehand. I tried to find actual ages for characters closer to the cut-off point, but when in doubt, I went by the portraying actor’s age when the show came out. And for long-running shows, some characters may have been under 50 at the beginning, but aren’t now.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV characters over 50. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Important: I know there are dozens of TV characters over 50 who are missing from this list. You can nominate characters I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (characters from live-action scripted shows only, please, and the character must be a main cast member or appear in at least 10 episodes of the show).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM October 23rd.

Who is your favorite TV character over 50? (Choose up to 10!)

  • Bobby Singer - Supernatural (20%, 183 Votes)
  • Gibbs - NCIS (11%, 98 Votes)
  • Ducky - NCIS (10%, 95 Votes)
  • Henry Spencer - Psych (6%, 53 Votes)
  • Rumpelstiltskin - Once Upon a Time (5%, 50 Votes)
  • Walter Bishop - Fringe (5%, 45 Votes)
  • Hetty Lange - NCIS: Los Angeles (5%, 43 Votes)
  • Martha - Castle (5%, 43 Votes)
  • Shepherd Book - Firefly (4%, 41 Votes)
  • Madeline Westen - Burn Notice (4%, 39 Votes)
  • Artie - Warehouse 13 (4%, 38 Votes)
  • Cliff Huxtable - The Cosby Show (4%, 34 Votes)
  • Clair Huxtable - The Cosby Show (3%, 30 Votes)
  • Jay Pritchett - Modern Family (3%, 24 Votes)
  • Dr. Lee Rosen - Alphas (2%, 21 Votes)
  • Gaius - Merlin (2%, 18 Votes)
  • Uther Pendragaon - Merlin (2%, 18 Votes)
  • Earl - 2 Broke Girls (2%, 14 Votes)
  • Frank Reagan - Blue Bloods (2%, 14 Votes)
  • Pierce Hawthorne - Community (1%, 13 Votes)
  • Creed - The Office (1%, 8 Votes)

Syfy’s heading to space! The network is developing this drama by actor/writer Todd Stashwick (who’s guested in everything from Buffy and Angel to Burn Notice and Leverage) and artist Dennis Calero, who met on Heroes and later created an online comic.

Clandestine is described as a swash-buckling space drama/adventure and revolves around mercenaries who masquerade as part of an Intergalactic fleet.

Monday Madness: Favorite Brilliant Yet Crazy Characters

This Monday Madness, in honor of TNT’s new show, Perception (which premieres Monday, July 9th, at 10/9c), we’re looking at TV’s brilliant yet crazy characters. Perception centers around a schizophrenic neuroscientist (Eric McCormack) who works with FBI Agent Kate Moretti (Rachel Lee Cook) to solve complex criminal cases. Perception also stars Arjay Smith and Kelly Rowan, with special appearances by Levar Burton.

For the purposes of this poll, I’m defining “crazy” as anywhere from clinically insane to mild disorders to kind of quirky. “Brilliant” ranges anywhere from off-the-charts IQ to uniquely skilled in a certain area (though most lean toward high IQ).

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite smart, zany characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 20-some options on this list, I know there are brilliant-crazy characters I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (from live-action scripted shows only, please, and avoid villains unless they’re a major part of the show).

Voting ends around 1AM July 9th.

Monday Madness: Favorite Summer Show

This Monday Madness, it’s time to bask in the delights of summer TV! As many broadcast shows go on hiatus for the summer, cable shows get a chance to shine! Also, we here in the US get the chance to experience some Canadian and British shows over the summer as well.

The selection of shows is based on US scheduling, and features shows within the past decade. I included some newer shows that had aired at least 3 episodes (giving Bunheads a little leeway since its third episode airs tonight). Not all of these shows air all their episodes in the summer – many have a split schedule, with the second half of seasons airing the following winter. Also, not all of these are still summer shows – for example, Psych has transitioned into a fall show, but since 5 of the past 6 seasons have started in July or August, I felt it qualified for the poll.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite summer shows. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 30-some options on this list, I know there are TV shows I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (live-action scripted shows only, please).

Monday Madness: Favorite Non-Original Cast Members

This Monday Madness, we’re looking at non-original cast members! Sometimes these characters replaced fan favorites who had left the show (for plot, personal, or business reasons), and often their presence upset the show’s dynamics. Many had a difficult time being accepted by long-time fans of the show, while with others it seemed like they had always been a part of the story. But, begrudgingly or with open arms, we learned to love most of these characters, and now you get to choose which ones are worthy of recognition!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite characters who joined their shows later on. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 50-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of characters I left out! You can nominate people I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll. I tried to limit this mostly to characters who joined after the complete first season, though with shorter-running shows I was more lenient. Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM June 11th.

UPDATE: this poll has ended. Vote for this week’s poll here: Favorite TV Dads.

USA Network Invites ‘Burn Notice’ Fans To Vote On The New Main Title Sequence For Season Six – Ratings | TVbytheNumbers

I guess USA Network has learned their lesson about messing with show intros without getting fan input! (Fans were upset when White Collar changed their opening titles without warning to cheesy art gallery-style pictures with completely different music that didn’t match the theme of the show. USA let fans vote on reverting to the old intro with adding cast or keeping the new one; fans chose the old.)

It’s hard for me to imagine Burn Notice without “My name is Michael Westen, I used to be a spy, until . . .” I hope at least one of the options still incorporates part of that, though “regular” credits would be nice, too.

The voting starts May 9, and will be open for two weeks. You can vote on the show’s Facebook page or a special site, as well as through USA’s Character Chatter. The winning intro will debut when Burn Notice returns on June 14. Full press release linked below.
