Monday Madness: Favorite Hero/Villain Duo

This Monday Madness, vote for your favorite hero/villain duos! The hero of any TV show, whether comic-book-based, sitcom, or procedural drama, always faces opposition in the pursuit of his/her goals. Often, that opposition comes from the people around our hero. But sometimes, one opposing person stands out from the crowd. They may be a twisted version of our hero, or just amazing at being evil. But you can be sure that an epic battle (of wits, weapons, or fisticuffs) is about to begin!

The pairs below are some of the more popular hero/villain duos, along with several nominated by readers of this blog. Which are your favorites? Go forth and vote!

Also, this poll is not as limited as previous ones – feel free to include older shows and villains who aren’t around for very long – just be sure to nominate ones that make an impression!

The winners of last week’s poll are here.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 5 of your favorite TV hero/villain duos. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will win!

I had a hard time coming up with duos for this list, and I know there are many more epic heroes and villains out there! As always, you can cast write-in ballots by leaving a comment, and if I receive several nominations, I may add them to the poll! Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Stay tuned – I have something special in mind for the rest of April and May!

Monday Madness: Favorite Brother/Sister Duo

Update: This poll is now closed. View the winners here, and check out this week’s poll!

This Monday Madness, vote for your favorite brother/sister duos! While many shows include 3, 4, or more siblings, this poll only focuses on a brother/sister pair – there may be other siblings, but only if they are less of a focus. (I may do a families poll in the future to cover families with multiple siblings like the Bluths.) As in the previous polls, I only included more recent shows, and included both half- and step-siblings, as well as adopted siblings (but not siblings-in-law).

I also did not include siblings when one of them is only in a handful of episodes.  My general rule of thumb was going with siblings who had both been in at least 1/3 of the episodes. Be sure to keep that in mind with any nominations!

The winners of last week’s poll are here.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 5 of your favorite TV brother/sister duos. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will win!

I had a hard time coming up with duos for this list, so I know there are brother/sister pairs I left out!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 12AM March 31st.

Which is your favorite TV brother/sister duo? (Choose up to 5!)

  • Roman and Sophia (Star-Crossed) (31%, 874 Votes)

Monday Madness: Save One Show 2013-2014

Update: this poll is now closed. You can vote for this week’s poll here, or click the image under “Weekly Poll” in the upper left sidebar. You can also see the results post here.

It’s that time of year, when TV fans wait with bated breath to see if their favorite shows will be back next year or will suffer the horrors of cancellation!

But if you had the opportunity and could save one show, which one would it be? For the purposes of this poll, I used TV By the Numbers Renew/Cancel Index. Every live-action scripted broadcast show that they rate as on the bubble or lower, and has not yet been officially canceled or renewed, I included in the poll below.

The site will update their predictions on Tuesday, so I had to base this on last week’s results. Also, if a show is canceled or renewed while this poll is active, I will remove the option for that show. Since you can choose up to 5 shows to save in the poll, you can vote for one on every network or mix it up!

The winner of last week’s poll were the sisters of Charmed! Second place went to Buffy and Dawn (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), followed by a tie for third place between Mary, Edith, and Sybil (Downton Abbey) and Abby and Jenny (Sleepy Hollow). Fifth place was a tie between Beth and Maggie (The Walking Dead) and Mary, Lucy, and Ruthie (7th Heaven).

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 5 of your favorite TV shows. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will win!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 12AM March 24th.

Which 2013-2014 broadcast show would you save? (Choose up to 5!)

  • Beauty and the Beast (The CW) (30%, 1,597 Votes)
  • Almost Human (Fox) (12%, 612 Votes)
  • Community (NBC) (11%, 595 Votes)
  • Hannibal (NBC) (7%, 380 Votes)
  • Star-Crossed (The CW) (5%, 250 Votes)
  • The Tomorrow People (The CW) (4%, 235 Votes)
  • Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (ABC) (4%, 190 Votes)
  • The Mentalist (CBS) (3%, 178 Votes)
  • Dracula (NBC) (3%, 171 Votes)

  • Enlisted (Fox) (3%, 138 Votes)
  • Revolution (NBC) (2%, 126 Votes)
  • Intelligence (CBS) (2%, 123 Votes)
  • The Neighbors (ABC) (2%, 104 Votes)
  • The Carrie Diaries (The CW) (2%, 83 Votes)
  • Parenthood (NBC) (2%, 82 Votes)
  • Nashville (ABC) (1%, 77 Votes)
  • Trophy Wife (ABC) (1%, 51 Votes)
  • Super Fun Night (ABC) (1%, 42 Votes)
  • Mind Games (ABC) (0%, 24 Votes)

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Sisters

Since our last poll featured TV brothers, now it’s time to vote for TV sisters!

Sisters seem to be a lot less common on TV than brothers. Like the previous poll, I only included more recent shows (2000-present, hence the absence of the Huxtable sisters), and included both half- and step-sisters (but not sisters-in-law). There are some slight spoilers for a few shows (two characters actually being sisters, a sister being still alive to be in multiple episodes, etc.).

I also did not include sisters when one of them is only in a handful of episodes. For example, Robin Scherbatsky’s sister Katie is only in 2 episodes (so far).  My general rule of thumb was going with sisters who had both/all been in at least 1/3 of the episodes. Be sure to keep that in mind with any nominations!

The winner of last week’s poll was Dean and Sam Winchester of Supernatural! Second place went to the Holmes brothers (Sherlock), followed by Klaus and Elijah (The Originals), Damon and Stefan (The Vampire Diaries), and Pete, Derrick, and Randy (Enlisted)!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 5 of your favorite TV sister duos (or trios). Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will win!

Even though there are many options on this list, I know there are sisters I left out!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 12AM March 17th.

Who are your favorite TV sisters? (Choose up to 5!)

  • Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell, and Paige Matthews (Charmed) (14%, 21 Votes)
  • Buffy and Dawn Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (13%, 19 Votes)
  • Mary, Edith, and Sybil Crawley (Downton Abbey) (12%, 17 Votes)
  • Abbie and Jenny Mills (Sleepy Hollow) (12%, 17 Votes)
  • Beth and Maggie Green (The Walking Dead) (10%, 15 Votes)
  • Mary, Lucy, and Ruthie Camden (7th Heaven) (10%, 15 Votes)
  • Annie Walker and Danielle Brooks (Covert Affairs) (6%, 9 Votes)
  • Laurel and Sara Lance (Arrow) (5%, 7 Votes)
  • Meredith and Lexie Grey (Grey's Anatomy) (4%, 6 Votes)
  • Sarah and Julia Braverman (Parenthood) (4%, 6 Votes)
  • Kristin, Mandy, and Eve Baxter (Last Man Standing) (3%, 5 Votes)
  • Siobhan Martin and Bridget Kelly (Ringer) (3%, 4 Votes)
  • Amber and Abby Weaver (The Neighbors) (1%, 2 Votes)
  • Emily Thorne and Charlotte Grayson (Revenge) (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Cassie Blake and Diana Meade (The Secret Circle) (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Amy and Ashley Juergens (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Jane Kerkovich-Williams and Alex Kerkovich (Happy Endings) (1%, 1 Votes)

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Brothers

ABC’s new drama Mind Games premieres this week (Tuesday, February 25, at 10/9c on ABC), and since the show focuses on two brothers, our poll this week features TV brothers! First, here’s the logline for Mind Games:

Centers on the complicated relationship between the Edwards brothers: Clark, a bipolar genius in human psychology, and Ross, a slick ex-con, who solve their clients’ problems using the real science of human motivation and manipulation.

It features one of my favorite comedic actors, Steve Zahn, so I can’t wait to check it out!

I didn’t realize until I started putting together this poll that it would pit some of the most popular fandoms against each other! (Sherlock, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, etc.) I only included more recent shows (hence the absence of The Brady Bunch boys), and included both half- and step-brothers (but not brothers-in-law).

I also did not include brothers when one of them is only in a handful of episodes. For example, Seeley Booth’s brother Jared is only in 5 episodes. I’d planned to include Michael Westen and his brother Nate, until I realized Nate was only in 15 episodes out of 111. My general rule of thumb was going with brothers who had both/all been in at least 1/3 of the episodes. Be sure to keep that in mind with any nominations!

The winner of last week’s poll, by a landslide, was Battlestar Galactica!

This poll will be open for one week two weeks, and you can choose up to 5 of your favorite TV brother duos (or trios). Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are many options on this list, I know there are shows I left out!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 12AM March 3rd 10th.

Who are your favorite TV brothers? (Choose up to 5!)

  • Dean and Sam Winchester (Supernatural) (19%, 25 Votes)
  • Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock) (15%, 20 Votes)
  • Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson (The Originals and The Vampire Diaries) (10%, 13 Votes)
  • Damon and Stefan Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries) (8%, 11 Votes)
  • Pete, Derrick, and Randy Hill (Enlisted) (5%, 7 Votes)
  • Don and Charlie Eppes (Numb3rs) (5%, 6 Votes)
  • Peter and Nathan Petrelli (Heroes) (5%, 6 Votes)
  • Frankie and Tommy Rizzoli (Rizzoli and Isles) (5%, 6 Votes)
  • Ben and Danny Wheeler (Baby Daddy) (5%, 6 Votes)
  • Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows (Prison Break) (5%, 6 Votes)
  • Francis and Sebastian (Reign) (4%, 5 Votes)
  • Lucas and Nathan Scott (One Tree Hill) (3%, 4 Votes)
  • Reggie Jackson and Dick Butkus (The Neighbors) (2%, 3 Votes)
  • Gob, Michael, and Buster Bluth (Arrested Development) (2%, 3 Votes)
  • Earl and Randy Hickey (My Name is Earl) (2%, 3 Votes)
  • Danny and Jamie Reagan (Blue Bloods) (2%, 3 Votes)
  • Adam and Crosby Braverman (Parenthood) (2%, 2 Votes)
  • Tim and Billy Riggins (Friday Night Lights) (2%, 2 Votes)
  • Jack and Declan Porter (Revenge) (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Tommy, Kevin and Justin Walker (Brothers & Sisters) (1%, 1 Votes)
  • Ethan and Dan Whitehorse (The Lying Game) (0%, 0 Votes)
  • Silas and Shane Botwin (Weeds) (0%, 0 Votes)

Monday Madness: Favorite Bear McCreary Show

Update: this poll is now closed. You can vote for this week’s poll here.

He’s composed music for some of TV’s top shows, and today’s his birthday! So for this first poll back after this site’s long hiatus, we’re going to celebrate the work of Bear McCreary!

I first noticed Bear’s stunning scores on the short-lived NBC series The Cape, and soon began paying special attention to who was scoring upcoming shows. I was excited to find out he’d been selected for Agents of SHIELD. This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite Bear McCreary-composed shows. Be sure to spread the word!

Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Also, feel free to suggest your own poll ideas!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around midnight next Sunday night.

Monday Madness: Favorite Christmas Episode

It’s hard to believe Christmas will be here in about a week! One of my favorite parts of the season are the awesome holiday episodes shows put out, and now it’s your turn to vote for your favorites! I purposely saved this poll for right before Christmas so I could add in some of 2012’s holiday episodes.

Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, Pinterest, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Our toolbar at the bottom of the page has lots of quick links to help you share this post, or you can mouse over the image above!

I know I’m missing some of your favorite Christmas episodes, so feel free to nominate more episodes on our Facebook page, tweeting me at @waterfallbooks, or by leaving a comment below. (Be sure to stick with live-action, scripted shows, though it’s fine if just this one episode has some animation, like with a certain Community episode.) Monday Madness: Favorite Characters Over 50

This week, Monday Madness returns with a look at those TV characters who buck the 18-49 demographic trend and prove that interesting characters make for great TV, no matter their age!

One important note: this poll does not include characters who have lived for many decades (or even centuries), but through supernatural means still look and act like 20somethings. So no vampires, Alphas who never age, or characters frozen in time for 28 years, unless they were 50+ beforehand. I tried to find actual ages for characters closer to the cut-off point, but when in doubt, I went by the portraying actor’s age when the show came out. And for long-running shows, some characters may have been under 50 at the beginning, but aren’t now.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV characters over 50. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Important: I know there are dozens of TV characters over 50 who are missing from this list. You can nominate characters I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (characters from live-action scripted shows only, please, and the character must be a main cast member or appear in at least 10 episodes of the show).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM October 23rd.

Who is your favorite TV character over 50? (Choose up to 10!)

  • Bobby Singer - Supernatural (20%, 183 Votes)
  • Gibbs - NCIS (11%, 98 Votes)
  • Ducky - NCIS (10%, 95 Votes)
  • Henry Spencer - Psych (6%, 53 Votes)
  • Rumpelstiltskin - Once Upon a Time (5%, 50 Votes)
  • Walter Bishop - Fringe (5%, 45 Votes)
  • Hetty Lange - NCIS: Los Angeles (5%, 43 Votes)
  • Martha - Castle (5%, 43 Votes)
  • Shepherd Book - Firefly (4%, 41 Votes)
  • Madeline Westen - Burn Notice (4%, 39 Votes)
  • Artie - Warehouse 13 (4%, 38 Votes)

Monday Madness: Favorite Brilliant Yet Crazy Characters

This Monday Madness, in honor of TNT’s new show, Perception (which premieres Monday, July 9th, at 10/9c), we’re looking at TV’s brilliant yet crazy characters. Perception centers around a schizophrenic neuroscientist (Eric McCormack) who works with FBI Agent Kate Moretti (Rachel Lee Cook) to solve complex criminal cases. Perception also stars Arjay Smith and Kelly Rowan, with special appearances by Levar Burton.

For the purposes of this poll, I’m defining “crazy” as anywhere from clinically insane to mild disorders to kind of quirky. “Brilliant” ranges anywhere from off-the-charts IQ to uniquely skilled in a certain area (though most lean toward high IQ).

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite smart, zany characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 20-some options on this list, I know there are brilliant-crazy characters I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (from live-action scripted shows only, please, and avoid villains unless they’re a major part of the show).

Voting ends around 1AM July 9th.

Monday Madness: Favorite Summer Show

This Monday Madness, it’s time to bask in the delights of summer TV! As many broadcast shows go on hiatus for the summer, cable shows get a chance to shine! Also, we here in the US get the chance to experience some Canadian and British shows over the summer as well.

The selection of shows is based on US scheduling, and features shows within the past decade. I included some newer shows that had aired at least 3 episodes (giving Bunheads a little leeway since its third episode airs tonight). Not all of these shows air all their episodes in the summer – many have a split schedule, with the second half of seasons airing the following winter. Also, not all of these are still summer shows – for example, Psych has transitioned into a fall show, but since 5 of the past 6 seasons have started in July or August, I felt it qualified for the poll.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite summer shows. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 30-some options on this list, I know there are TV shows I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (live-action scripted shows only, please).

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM July 2nd.

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Dads

This Monday Madness, in honor of Father’s Day this coming Sunday here in the US, we’re looking at TV dads! These dads, whether grounded or goofy, often set the tone of their shows, and no matter how difficult or stubborn, always have a soft spot for their kids. This poll is focusing on actual (both biological and adoptive) dads, since including father-like figures would have made it too lengthy – though many of the dads on this poll do have a father-like role in other characters’ lives.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV dads. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 50 70-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of TV dads I left out! You can nominate fathers I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (dads from live-action scripted shows only, please, and the dad must be in at least 3 episodes of the show).

Monday Madness: Favorite Non-Original Cast Members

This Monday Madness, we’re looking at non-original cast members! Sometimes these characters replaced fan favorites who had left the show (for plot, personal, or business reasons), and often their presence upset the show’s dynamics. Many had a difficult time being accepted by long-time fans of the show, while with others it seemed like they had always been a part of the story. But, begrudgingly or with open arms, we learned to love most of these characters, and now you get to choose which ones are worthy of recognition!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite characters who joined their shows later on. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 50-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of characters I left out! You can nominate people I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll. I tried to limit this mostly to characters who joined after the complete first season, though with shorter-running shows I was more lenient. Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM June 11th.

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Couples – Speculative

In part two of our TV couples Monday Madness, we’re looking at couples in speculative TV shows! Whether it’s sci fi, fantasy, paranormal, historical myths, or just a futuristic bent, these shows all have something out of the ordinary, even if the couples in them are perfectly normal human beings.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV couples. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 40-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of couples I left out! You can nominate couples I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll.

Voting ends around 1AM June 4th.

UPDATE: poll has ended. Go vote in this week’s poll!

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Couples – Realistic

This round of Monday Madness, it’s time to look at TV couples! Because there are so many, I’ve divided this poll into 2 categories – realistic/contemporary and speculative. We’ll cover vampires, time travel, and spaceships next week. This week, we’re looking at couples from dramas, comedies, crime shows, and action. (And yes, it was really hard to decide where to put the couples from Chuck, with the show’s speculative elements, but since the show focuses on the spy aspect, I felt it was best to put it with the other spy shows.)

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV couples. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 40 50-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of couples I left out! You can nominate couples I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll. You can also start nominating couples from paranormal, futuristic, and other outside-the-box shows for next week. Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM May 28th.

UPDATE: This poll is now closed. Go vote for this week’s poll – favorite TV couples in speculative shows!
