TV Olympics: Favorite Cast-Performed Song

Today launches our final mini-poll event, cast-performed songs! A week from today we’ll tally the medals and see who won the 2012 TV Olympics! The current top shows only have 6-8 medals so this is still very much any show’s game!

If you have more nominations for this poll, please leave them in the comments! Songs should be from scripted live-action shows, and be performed (at least in part) by cast members. Lip-synching (sorry, Supernatural fans who nominated “Eye of the Tiger”) and guest star only performances aren’t eligible. We’re also excluding songs from all-musical shows like Glee and Smash (there would simply be too many options).

Since this poll focuses on musical performances, I’ve created a playlist for the songs that I could find on YouTube. Of course the quality of the videos will vary, with some being lyrics or photos only, and there were several I was unable to find (also, several won’t embed). Listen for help in making this very hard choice!

I will make it a little easier on you, though: Since this is the final poll of the event, you can select 10 options instead of the usual 3!

This poll will be open for one week, and remember, you can choose up to 10 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite cast-performed song? (Choose up to 10!)

  • Psych - "Shout" (Shawn and Gus) (15%, 286 Votes)
  • Leverage - "Thinking of You" (Eliot) (11%, 219 Votes)
  • Supernatural - "Dead or Alive" (Dean and Sam) (11%, 217 Votes)
  • Leverage - "Chasing Down Bad Guys in Lucille" (Hardison and Eliot) (10%, 186 Votes)
  • Angel - "LA Song" (Lindsey) (8%, 158 Votes)
  • White Collar - "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" (Neal and June) (6%, 110 Votes)

TV Olympics: Favorite Hero/Villain Performance

In this penultimate round of the TV Olympics, we’re looking at actors who have excelled at playing both heroes and villains. Two distinct roles in two different shows were nominated, and now, based on those two performances, it’s time for you to judge which actor embraced their good guy and bad guy sides best.

I know there could have been other roles nominated for these actors, but I went with your suggestions – Nathan Fillion was nominated for Firefly, not Castle, and Jensen Ackles had more votes for Dark Angel than Smallville. There’s still room to nominate additional actors who have played both heroes and villains, but both roles must be on different TV shows (no movies), and the actor should be a main cast member in at least one of those shows.

Tomorrow, the final mini-poll event, cast-performed songs (nominate away, but avoid all-musical shows), will launch, and a week from then we will tally the medals and see who won the 2012 TV Olympics! The current top shows only have 6-8 medals so this is still very much any show’s game!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite hero/villain performance by the same actor on different shows? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Timothy Omundson - Carlton Lassiter (hero) on Psych, Phil Constantino (villain) on Jericho (31%, 878 Votes)
  • Jensen Ackles – Dean Winchester (hero) on Supernatural, Ben/X5-493 (villain) on Dark Angel (25%, 716 Votes)
  • Nathan Fillion - Malcolm Reynolds (hero) on Firefly, Caleb (villain) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (9%, 263 Votes)
  • Christian Kane - Eliot Spencer (hero) on Leverage, Lindsey McDonald (villain) on Angel (8%, 240 Votes)
  • Tim DeKay - Peter Burke (hero) on White Collar, Kieran Ryker (villain) on Chuck (8%, 225 Votes)
  • Leonard Nimoy - Spock (hero) on Star Trek, William Bell (villain) on Fringe (5%, 155 Votes)
  • Tiffani Thiessen - Elizabeth Burke (hero) on White Collar, Valerie Malone (villain) on Beverly Hills, 90210 (3%, 90 Votes)
  • Ross McCall – Joe Liebgott (hero) on Band of Brothers, Matthew Keller (villain) on White Collar (2%, 64 Votes)
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar - Buffy Summers (hero) on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Siobhan Martin (villain) on Ringer (2%, 60 Votes)
  • Gina Torres - Zoe Washburne (hero) on Firefly, Jasmine (villain) on Angel (2%, 55 Votes)
  • Michael Emerson - Harold Finch (hero) on Person of Interest, Ben Linus (villain) on Lost (2%, 44 Votes)
  • Morena Baccarin - Inara Serra (hero) on Firefly, Anna (villain) on V (1%, 38 Votes)
  • Enrico Colantoni - Keith Mars (hero) on Veronica Mars, Elias (villain) on Person of Interest (1%, 26 Votes)

Total Voters: 1,951

TV Olympics: Favorite Mom/Daughter Duo

For this round of our TV Olympics (just 2 more rounds left!), we’re looking at mother/daughter duos! While they seem to be a bit more rare on TV than any of our previous duos, there are several distinct shows that feature strong mother/daughter pairs (Gilmore Girls has two of them!).

This poll is for actual mothers (not mother-figures), and since the relationship between mom and daughter is a key part of the poll, they need to have appeared in a number of episodes together, and infant daughters are excluded. There were only a few nominations for this poll, so if you know of any duos you believe should be added, please leave their names and the show in a comment!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite mother/daughter duos. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

What's your favorite mother/daughter duo? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Ellen and Jo - Supernatural (22%, 139 Votes)
  • Jackie and Rose - Doctor Who (17%, 106 Votes)
  • Amy and River - Doctor Who (14%, 87 Votes)
  • Lorelai and Rory - Gilmore Girls (12%, 79 Votes)
  • Snow White and Emma - Once Upon a Time (11%, 68 Votes)
  • Angela and Jane - Rizzoli & Isles (8%, 48 Votes)
  • Joyce and Buffy - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (7%, 43 Votes)
  • Emily and Lorelai - Gilmore Girls (5%, 30 Votes)

TV Olympics: Favorite Father/Son Duos

For this round of our TV Olympics (our final poll will launch Sunday), we’re looking at father/son duos! There are a few trios in this poll, since for several of these dads, the bond between both sons seemed equally strong. For others, one father/son relationship seemed more dynamic that the other (and hence more worthy of the term “duo”).

This poll is for actual fathers (biological and adoptive, but not simply father-figures), and since the relationship between dad and son is a key part of the poll, they need to have appeared in a number of episodes together, and infant sons are excluded. If you know of any duos you believe should be in the poll, leave their names and the show in a comment!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite dad/son duos. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

What's your favorite father/son duo? (Choose up to 3!)

  • John and Dean/Sam - Supernatural (27%, 269 Votes)
  • Henry and Shawn - Psych (27%, 264 Votes)
  • Walter and Peter - Fringe (15%, 144 Votes)
  • Alan and Don/Charlie - Numb3rs (9%, 92 Votes)
  • Jackson and Jethro - NCIS (6%, 61 Votes)
  • Jonathan and Clark - Smallville (3%, 34 Votes)
  • Uther and Arthur - Merlin (3%, 32 Votes)
  • Marvin and Marshall - How I Met Your Mother (3%, 28 Votes)
  • Nathan and Jamie - One Tree Hill (3%, 27 Votes)
  • Stephen and Chuck - Chuck (2%, 24 Votes)
  • Cliff and Theo - The Cosby Show (2%, 17 Votes)
  • Frank and Danny - Blue Bloods (1%, 9 Votes)
  • Vince and Trip - The Cape (0%, 3 Votes)

Total Voters: 582

TV Olympics: Favorite TV Animal

For this round of our TV Show Olympics, we’re looking at animals on TV! Whether furry or scaly, they often add color and dimension to the TV shows of which they are a part. This poll does not include characters who appear human most of the time but also can show up as animals – werewolves, shapeshifters, etc., but mythological animals are allowed.

For an animal to qualify for this poll, it has to appear in more than one episode of the show (which left out some nominated favorites from Psych, Supernatural, and NCIS). As usual, only live-action, scripted shows are included. If you have additional nominations, please put them in the comments!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite TV animals. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

TV Olympics: Favorite Switched-Body Performance

This round of the TV Olympics, we’re looking at switched-body performances! It’s typical of many science fiction and fantasy shows to have an episode or two when characters switch consciousness with each other. Usually it’s a one-to-one ratio, but other episodes get more creative – three characters switching, one character played by two actors, etc.

This isn’t one actor playing two characters (if that is more of a long-term thing, it probably fits into our dual roles poll), it’s where one actor plays a role typically portrayed by another actor (or a new enemy), and usually for only one or two episodes.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite switched-body performance? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Jared Padalecki as Lucifer - Supernatural (31%, 352 Votes)
  • Matt Cohen as Michael - Supernatural (22%, 252 Votes)
  • Joanne Kelly as Pete and Eddie McClintock as Myka - Warehouse 13 (9%, 105 Votes)
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar as Faith and Eliza Dushku as Buffy - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (9%, 98 Votes)
  • Ben Browder as Aeryn and Claudia Black as Rygel - Farscape (8%, 90 Votes)
  • Joanne Kelly as Alice - Warehouse 13 (5%, 56 Votes)
  • Christopher Judge as Jack O'Neill and Richard Dean Anderson as Teal'c - Stargate SG-1 (4%, 47 Votes)
  • Colin Ferguson as Fargo, Zane, and Allison, Neil Grayston, Niall Matter, and Salli Richardson-Whitfield as Carter - Eureka (4%, 45 Votes)
  • Enver Gjokaj as Topher - Dollhouse (3%, 35 Votes)
  • Sam Trammell as Tommy and Luna - True Blood (2%, 28 Votes)
  • Mark Salling as Blaine - Glee (2%, 22 Votes)
  • Darren Criss as Puck - Glee (2%, 21 Votes)

TV Olympics: Favorite Dual Role

This round of the TV Olympics, we’re looking at dual roles in TV! Whether it’s distinct personae within the same being, or entirely different people, both are portrayed by the same actor for a number of episodes. Whether twins, clones, alternate dimensions, artificial memories, or hostile takeovers, these roles require excellent acting to pull off. Which are your favorites?

I know there are several great dual roles missing from this poll (seems to be a lack of space-set shows) – please let me know which ones in the comments! They should all be from live-action, scripted shows, and the dual role should be in at least several episodes. This shouldn’t be a temporary switched-body thing, where one actor plays a role typically portrayed by another actor – we’ll be doing that poll tomorrow!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite dual role? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Angel/Angelus (David Boreanaz) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (18%, 50 Votes)
  • Willow/Vampire Willow (Alyson Hannigan) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (12%, 34 Votes)
  • Snow White/Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) - Once Upon a Time (12%, 32 Votes)
  • Olivia/Fauxlivia (Anna Torv) - Fringe (11%, 31 Votes)
  • Fred/Illyria (Amy Acker) - Angel (11%, 30 Votes)
  • Elena/Katherine (Nina Dobrev) - The Vampire Diaries (8%, 21 Votes)
  • Buffy/Buffybot/The First (Sarah Michelle Gellar) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (7%, 19 Votes)

TV Olympics: Best Werewolf Effects and Rules

For this round of TV Breakroom’s Olympic event, we’re going to look at all the different variations of werewolves on TV! This poll is not only about the visual effects – transformation and full wolf – but also the werewolf mythology and rules within each story world. Do werewolves change only on the full moon, on the nights surrounding it, or whenever they please? What happens if they try to suppress the change? Can a werewolf make a human into a werewolf with just a scratch, or does it have to be a bite? Do they have to be in wolf form to do so? Or are werewolves only hereditary? Will a werewolf killed in wolf form revert to a human? How can they be killed?

Side note – I’ve been pondering the above questions recently as I’m working on writing a novel that includes scientifically-created werewolves. I plan to share more about this story and its deep connection to TV shows with you in the near future!

If there are any TV werewolves that I missed (and they appear in more than one episode of the show), please feel free to nominate them in the comments. Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options.

Which show has the best werewolf effects and rules? (Choose up to 3!)

  • The Vampire Diaries (34%, 104 Votes)
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel (15%, 45 Votes)
  • Teen Wolf (13%, 39 Votes)
  • Once Upon a Time (10%, 32 Votes)
  • True Blood (10%, 30 Votes)
  • Being Human (UK) (7%, 22 Votes)

TV Olympics: Best Vampire Effects and Rules

For this round of TV Breakroom’s Olympic event, we’re going to look at all the different variations of vampires on TV! I know we had favorite Christmas episode originally scheduled for today, but at 30 options and still growing it no longer counts as a mini-poll (I’m saving it for December).

This poll is not only about the visual effects – fangs, black eyes, bumpy foreheads, and bloody tears – but also the vampire mythology and rules within each story world. Do vampires have a soul, and if not, can they regain them? How can you kill them – does sunlight, silver, holy water, etc. work? Do they turn into a pile of dust or a bloody mess when they die? Can they ever come back from that? Do they have to drink human blood, or can synthetic or animal blood work? Do they have to be invited in? Do they have super speed? Can they hypnotize humans?

Side note – I’ve been pondering the above questions recently as I’m working on writing a novel that includes scientifically-created vampires. How much of the vampire mythos can I find reasonable explanations for, and therefore include (yeah, invitations won’t be needed for these vampires). I plan to share more about this story and its deep connection to TV shows with you in the near future!

If there are any TV vampires that I missed (and they appear in more than one episode of the show), please feel free to nominate them in the comments. Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options.

Which show has the best vampire effects and rules? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Supernatural (32%, 82 Votes)
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel (23%, 57 Votes)

TV Olympics: Favorite Crossover Episode

I love crossover episodes – when characters from one show guest star on another. Often, this happens when one show is spun off from another. Since the shows are already set in the same “universe,” it makes crossover episodes easier, and you get the opportunity to see characters interacting who haven’t for a while. Other times, two similar shows are on the same network when it’s decided to have them do a crossover event (which sometimes creates logical inconsistencies, like with the Warehouse 13 and Eureka crossovers – main cast from both shows had previously guest starred on the other show, as different characters!).

I will be awarding medals to both (or all three) shows in each crossover. If I’ve missed some great crossover episodes, please let me know in the comments! I purposely am not including “planted pilot” episodes (like “The Finder” episode of Bones, or the two-part “Legend” episode of NCIS that launched NCIS: Los Angeles). This poll is about two (or three) shows connecting after both shows exist.

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite crossover episodes. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

What's your favorite crossover episode? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Doctor Who (Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures) - The Stolen Earth and Journey's End (13%, 45 Votes)
  • NCIS: Los Angeles (NCIS) - Random on Purpose (11%, 40 Votes)
  • The Finder (Bones) - Little Green Men (11%, 38 Votes)
  • The Finder (Bones) - Bullets (9%, 30 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - I Will Remember You (8%, 28 Votes)
  • CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY - Bone Voyage, Hammer Down, The Lost Girls (7%, 24 Votes)
  • NCIS: Los Angeles (Hawaii Five-O) - Touch of Death (7%, 23 Votes)
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Angel) - Pangs (6%, 20 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Five By Five (5%, 19 Votes)
  • Eureka (Warehouse 13) - Crossing Over (5%, 16 Votes)
  • Warehouse 13 (Eureka) - Don't Hate the Player (4%, 14 Votes)
  • Hawaii Five-O (NCIS: Los Angeles) - Pa Make Loa (3%, 12 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - In the Dark (3%, 12 Votes)
  • Hawaii Five-O (NCIS: Los Angeles) - Ka Hakaka Maika'i (3%, 11 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Orpheus (3%, 11 Votes)
  • Warehouse 13 (Eureka) - 13.1 (3%, 10 Votes)

Total Voters: 160
