TV Olympics: Best Married Couple

Round two of TV Breakroom’s Olympic mini-poll event features married couples in live-action, scripted shows! Some of these were married when their shows began, others found their way to each other throughout the show. (With Once Upon a Time’s Prince Charming and Snow White, it was a little of both!)

If you haven’t already voted on Cutest Couple Names, you still have 6 days left! And keep up with all the polls and results on our main event page.

Like all the other polls in this event, this poll will be open for one week. You can vote for up to 3 married couples, and the top 3 will be awarded medals toward their shows’ totals!

Who is your favorite married couple? (Choose up to 3!)

Exclusive: Law & Order: SVU Casts Adam Baldwin as Cragen’s Replacement! – Today’s News: Our Take | TVGuide.com

Adam Baldwin, most famous for his gun-toting Firefly and Chuck roles, will be appearing on the first three episodes of next season’s Law & Order: SVU, as an interim replacement for Capt. Steve Harris (who’s in a bit of a pickle after the season finale events). From Baldwin’s previous roles, I’m getting the feeling he’s not going to be the most understanding temporary boss.

I’m glad Adam Baldwin is getting all these guest spots (he also was recently on Castle and Leverage), but I’d really like to see him on a show of his own again soon!

Monday Madness: Favorite Brilliant Yet Crazy Characters

This Monday Madness, in honor of TNT’s new show, Perception (which premieres Monday, July 9th, at 10/9c), we’re looking at TV’s brilliant yet crazy characters. Perception centers around a schizophrenic neuroscientist (Eric McCormack) who works with FBI Agent Kate Moretti (Rachel Lee Cook) to solve complex criminal cases. Perception also stars Arjay Smith and Kelly Rowan, with special appearances by Levar Burton.

For the purposes of this poll, I’m defining “crazy” as anywhere from clinically insane to mild disorders to kind of quirky. “Brilliant” ranges anywhere from off-the-charts IQ to uniquely skilled in a certain area (though most lean toward high IQ).

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite smart, zany characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 20-some options on this list, I know there are brilliant-crazy characters I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (from live-action scripted shows only, please, and avoid villains unless they’re a major part of the show).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM July 9th.

Who's your favorite brilliant but crazy character? (Choose up to 10)

  • River Tam (Summer Glau) - Firefly (16%, 1,291 Votes)

Exclusive: Leverage Hosts an Angel Reunion – Today’s News: Our Take | TVGuide.com

Okay, this news is just amazing! Adam Baldwin (one of my favorite actors) is guest-starring on Leverage (one of my favorite shows)!

Baldwin and Leverage’s Christian Kane both appeared in Angel’s fifth season, and Kane’s character was one out of only two characters to appear in both the pilot and the finale of the show. Baldwin is best known to TV fans for playing Jayne on Firefly and John Casey on Chuck.

TV Guide shared this:

Baldwin will play the possibly recurring role Col. Michael Vance, an ex-Army Ranger who now runs a government counter-terrorism unit. However, Vance often ruffles the feathers of other intelligence community bureaucrats with his unorthodox method of recruiting small teams of agents — and even civilians — from a wide range of expertise. Sounds like the kind of guy who might call on Nate & Co. for help, right?

The Hard Truths Behind Dan Harmon’s Community Ousting and My Thoughts

A voice of reason amid all the cries of “Why even watch season 4?” “This is the darkest timeline,” and “Community won’t be Community without Dan Harmon,” this article looks at all the very plausible explanations for why he was fired.

While the show started out as an accessible, though quirky, sitcom, over the past few years it has evolved into a very niche show. I still love it, but occasionally there are episodes that try so hard to parody something that they forget to be funny (“Pillows & Blankets” was the latest offense – I think I laughed once during the entire episode).

The article linked below focuses on what good might come out of the change in showrunners. I for one am hoping the changes will be reminiscent of Mark Ruffalo playing the Hulk instead of Edward Norton in The Avengers. I know comparing actors to showrunners is a bit like comparing apples to apple trees, but both Norton and Harmon have a reputation for being difficult to work with. Bringing in Ruffalo was far from the only thing that made The Avengers a success, but I believe it helped. (Side note, since I’m already talking about The Avengers, wouldn’t it be awesome if Joss Whedon had become Community’s new showrunner? I know it’s completely different from his own shows – though not from ones he’s worked on – and unlikely to have worked out, but can you imagine the fan craziness that would have ensued?)

Found this right after I finished this post, and thought it was amazing! (And very fitting to add.)

But what I don’t understand with this move to make Community more mainstream, is why NBC still plans to air Community on Fridays, a timeslot usually reserved for niche shows. It seems like they’d do one or the other (fire Dan Harmon or move the show to Fridays), not both. How is the show expected to pick up new viewers that way? Far better to air the final season of 30 Rock there instead. I would have put Community on at 8 on Wednesdays, followed by Animal Practice (giving the new show the benefit of a veteran lead-in). Then Thursdays could have started with sophomore Up All Night at 8, followed by the similarly-themed Guys With Kids. I do hope some executive at NBC is smart enough to figure that out before fall, and if not, that a new show bombs quickly and NBC rearranges things.

Alcatraz Cancelled — Fox Axes The Finder Too – TVLine

Not a bit surprised, given the ratings for both, but I was hoping against hope The Finder would make it. As it turned out, despite making it to #4 in this site’s poll for favorite new shows, it’s the first of my long-shot shows to fall.

And Fox rubbed salt in the wound by renewing Touch, a show whose previews put me to sleep. At least they’re letting House wrap up properly. And renewing Bones and New Girl.

(I will not think of Firefly and Dollhouse. I will not think of Firefly and Dollhouse.) Okay, I will, because Joss Whedon can rub the success of The Avengers into Fox’s face now.

Top 10 Canceled Shows That Should Return

The votes are in! A record-setting 9043 people voted for which shows they’d like to see return. Shows were limited to ones that had 3 seasons or less. Here are the results for TV Breakroom’s first-ever Monday Madness poll!

Number 10: Jericho

This show about a small town impacted by a nuclear event barely made it into the top 10, being only 3 votes away from #11, Dark Angel. After it was canceled following its freshman season, fans were able to bring it back for a 7-episode second season. The story continued in comic form, and there are still movie rumors spreading around.

Monday Madness: Who’s Your Favorite Quirky Character?

This round of Monday Madness, it’s time to look at those crazy characters in the shows we love. Often, they’re on the sidelines – not the main character, their romantic interest, or the person in charge. They provide comic relief in otherwise serious shows, or are a main source of laughter in comedies. They can be indispensable, evil, or hopelessly inept. But they refuse to fade into the background, and the shows wouldn’t be the same without them.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite quirky characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 40 options on this list, I know there are many great characters I left out! As always, you can cast write-in ballots by leaving a comment. Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM April 16th.

Now we know what happened to all of the old textbooks from UC Sunnydale. : buffy

Considering the lack of crossover between people who worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and people who worked on Community (just a handful of undistinctive guest stars – most notably, the old lady from “Doublemeat Palace” voices Pierce’s mom; some stunt people, and a few miscellaneous crew), this Easter egg is even more awesome. Though as much as Troy and Abed love Firefly, it’s likely they’ve checked out other Joss Whedon-related stuff.
