TV Olympics: Favorite Elementary-Aged Character

Poll #4 in our Olympic event (have you been keeping up?) focuses on characters aged 6-12 and the talented child actors who play them. From this small list of nominees, you can see that elementary-school-aged characters have grown increasingly rare in the TV world, but there still are a handful of awesome ones out there (and if we’ve missed any that regularly appear on live-action, scripted shows, let us know!).

You can chose up to 3 characters, and this poll (like the others) will be open for one week. And yes, I am aware that some of these characters have moved past their elementary school years, but all spent a significant part of their show in that age range. Vote and spread the word!

Who is your favorite elementary-aged kid? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Henry - Once Upon a Time (27%, 74 Votes)
  • Young Shawn - Psych (21%, 58 Votes)
  • Young Gus - Psych (18%, 50 Votes)
  • Brick - The Middle (12%, 33 Votes)
  • Manny - Modern Family (11%, 31 Votes)
  • Kevin - Eureka (5%, 15 Votes)
  • Julie - Monk (3%, 9 Votes)
  • Benji - Monk (2%, 5 Votes)
  • Charlie - Bent (1%, 4 Votes)

Total Voters: 141

TV Olympics: Cutest Couple Name

We’re launching this year’s TV Olympics with the ever-so-cute (you can read that as sarcastic if you lean toward a more jaded view of the world) category of couple names! Often these are used by fans to promote their preferred pairing in shows with love triangles, but occasionally they’ve shown up in actual episodes:

The Big Bang Theory (The Zazzy Substitution):

Penny: Hey look, it’s Shamy.
Amy: Shamy?
Sheldon: Juvenile amalgamation of our names. Sheldon, Amy. Shamy.
Amy: Oh. I don’t like that. Don’t do that.

NCIS (Life Before His Eyes):

Tony: I remember you. Riva. No, Visa. No, no, no. Tiva!
Ziva: Ziva.

You can vote for up to 3 options, and the top 3 answers will receive medals for their shows! Poll closes in one week. Be sure to check out our other polls and results on the main event page!

Which is your favorite couple name? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Tiva (Tony and Ziva) - NCIS (28%, 456 Votes)
  • Densi (Deeks and Kensi) - NCIS: Los Angeles (18%, 284 Votes)
  • Caskett (Castle and Beckett) - Castle (15%, 235 Votes)
  • McAbby (McGee and Abby) - NCIS (11%, 186 Votes)
  • Shamy (Sheldon and Amy) - The Big Bang Theory (7%, 117 Votes)

Psych to Stage Musical Episode — Season 7 – TVLine

Fun video interview with James Roday, Dule Hill, and Psych series creator Steve Franks! They were tight-lipped about Henry’s fate, but offered a huge list of guest stars for the Clue-themed 100th episode. They also mentioned they weren’t able to get one actor for season 6, hence the delay, but they were also not able to get said person for season 7 either (my guess – they were hoping to stage a Tim Curry reappearance).

The trio also mentioned that the musical episode has been expanded to a two-hour movie event that will air on a different day than normal episodes, and will feature all-original songs. (The musical episodes I enjoyed the most – from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Community’s latest – tend to use original songs, so this is a plus in my book.)

Also, the rumor about a proposal appears to be true – I wonder if the show will pull a fast one on us, though, and have Lassie pop the question to his lady-love instead of Shawn doing so.

Video at the link below:

Psych to Stage Musical Episode — Season 7 – TVLine.

What are you looking forward to about season 7 of Psych?

Monday Madness: Favorite Brilliant Yet Crazy Characters

This Monday Madness, in honor of TNT’s new show, Perception (which premieres Monday, July 9th, at 10/9c), we’re looking at TV’s brilliant yet crazy characters. Perception centers around a schizophrenic neuroscientist (Eric McCormack) who works with FBI Agent Kate Moretti (Rachel Lee Cook) to solve complex criminal cases. Perception also stars Arjay Smith and Kelly Rowan, with special appearances by Levar Burton.

For the purposes of this poll, I’m defining “crazy” as anywhere from clinically insane to mild disorders to kind of quirky. “Brilliant” ranges anywhere from off-the-charts IQ to uniquely skilled in a certain area (though most lean toward high IQ).

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite smart, zany characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 20-some options on this list, I know there are brilliant-crazy characters I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (from live-action scripted shows only, please, and avoid villains unless they’re a major part of the show).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM July 9th.

Who's your favorite brilliant but crazy character? (Choose up to 10)

  • River Tam (Summer Glau) - Firefly (16%, 1,291 Votes)
  • Castiel (Misha Collins) - Supernatural (11%, 916 Votes)

Monday Madness: Favorite Summer Show

This Monday Madness, it’s time to bask in the delights of summer TV! As many broadcast shows go on hiatus for the summer, cable shows get a chance to shine! Also, we here in the US get the chance to experience some Canadian and British shows over the summer as well.

The selection of shows is based on US scheduling, and features shows within the past decade. I included some newer shows that had aired at least 3 episodes (giving Bunheads a little leeway since its third episode airs tonight). Not all of these shows air all their episodes in the summer – many have a split schedule, with the second half of seasons airing the following winter. Also, not all of these are still summer shows – for example, Psych has transitioned into a fall show, but since 5 of the past 6 seasons have started in July or August, I felt it qualified for the poll.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite summer shows. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 30-some options on this list, I know there are TV shows I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (live-action scripted shows only, please).

Top 10 Favorite TV Dads

Here are TV’s top 10 dads, as chosen by all of you! I find it especially appropriate that the on-screen daughter of this poll’s winner helped spread the word to get people to vote for her “dad”! Also of note – nine of the 10 dads are from shows that are currently airing or will return in the fall.

#10 Gibbs (Mark Harmon) – NCIS

Top 15 Favorite Non-Original Cast Members

As chosen by you, the voters, here are the top 15 favorite non-original cast members! I expanded this list from 10 to 15 because six of the top 10 were from two related shows. Feel free to consider #11-15 honorable mentions if you’re a top 10 purist. 🙂

The poll, while it didn’t quite receive the most votes, set a new record for most-viewed poll (and post) to date – and all in one week! Thanks to everyone who voted, and especially to those who spread the word about the poll!

Here are the results!

#15 – Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) from NCIS: Los Angeles

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Dads

This Monday Madness, in honor of Father’s Day this coming Sunday here in the US, we’re looking at TV dads! These dads, whether grounded or goofy, often set the tone of their shows, and no matter how difficult or stubborn, always have a soft spot for their kids. This poll is focusing on actual (both biological and adoptive) dads, since including father-like figures would have made it too lengthy – though many of the dads on this poll do have a father-like role in other characters’ lives.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV dads. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 50 70-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of TV dads I left out! You can nominate fathers I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (dads from live-action scripted shows only, please, and the dad must be in at least 3 episodes of the show).

This Monday Madness, we’re looking at non-original cast members! Sometimes these characters replaced fan favorites who had left the show (for plot, personal, or business reasons), and often their presence upset the show’s dynamics. Many had a difficult time being accepted by long-time fans of the show, while with others it seemed like they had always been a part of the story. But, begrudgingly or with open arms, we learned to love most of these characters, and now you get to choose which ones are worthy of recognition!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite characters who joined their shows later on. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 50-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of characters I left out! You can nominate people I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll. I tried to limit this mostly to characters who joined after the complete first season, though with shorter-running shows I was more lenient. Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM June 11th.

UPDATE: this poll has ended. Vote for this week’s poll here: Favorite TV Dads.

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Couples – Realistic

This round of Monday Madness, it’s time to look at TV couples! Because there are so many, I’ve divided this poll into 2 categories – realistic/contemporary and speculative. We’ll cover vampires, time travel, and spaceships next week. This week, we’re looking at couples from dramas, comedies, crime shows, and action. (And yes, it was really hard to decide where to put the couples from Chuck, with the show’s speculative elements, but since the show focuses on the spy aspect, I felt it was best to put it with the other spy shows.)

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite TV couples. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 40 50-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of couples I left out! You can nominate couples I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll. You can also start nominating couples from paranormal, futuristic, and other outside-the-box shows for next week. Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM May 28th.

5 Long-Shot TV Shows I Want To See Renewed

I’ve watched the ratings and predictions, and it seems like many of the shows I love are coming back next year. But there are a handful of shows that seem headed toward cancellation that I’m hoping against hope will beat the odds and get another shot. These aren’t shows that have been yanked from the schedule (like Free Agents), or that spent a lot of time in the danger zone, yet got renewed (like Fringe) or will likely be renewed (like Community). These are shows that most TV experts consider “bubble shows” or “long-shots” or “beyond hope.” I do think perhaps one of them will be fortunate enough to get a renewal; I’d be very happy if 2 or more made it.

UPDATE: I was correct. One – and only one – of these shows did get renewed: Nikita. Which if I’d had to guess which one might make it, I would have chosen.

Here are the shows, in no particular order, that in my perfect dream world would be coming back in 2012-2013:

Nikita

This is the show that got me to take the CW seriously for the first time. It perfectly filled the void left by Dollhouse’s cancellation (except for the mind-bending stuff). I love the “family of rogue agents” that has formed in this second season. Most recent spy shows have a lighter, humorous feel. This show manages to remain dark, but still be awesomely fun to watch.

Ringer

I started watching this show because of the intriguing premise and because I was curious to see what Sarah Michelle Gellar was like as not-Buffy. I stayed because of Ioan Gruffudd. I’d seen him in several movies (102 Dalmatians, Amazing Grace, Fantastic Four), but I didn’t fall in love with his acting until this show. It was nice to have Veronica Mars’ Jason Dohring around again too. The show was almost too twisty (I found myself saving up several episodes to watch so I could avoid agonizing cliffhangers), but it was very engaging and always kept me wanting more.

The Finder

My brother thought this show was on USA Network, and the humor on it matches the tone of that network perfectly. Walter could be Shawn Spencer’s long-lost cousin. I just love how zany and lighthearted and pure fun this show is. Plus it’s much more flexible than typical crime shows – finding things can take you anywhere. It’s also nice to have Bones characters dropping by occasionally.

Awake

I’ll admit, this was much more of a crime drama than a mind-twister than I was expecting. Still, it’s excellent, and piecing clues together from different worlds adds a great new dimension. I realize you can’t give away the entire “story behind the story” in the first season, but I really want to know more of what’s going on. Hopefully the show will get a second season (even if abbreviated) to dive into things, like Dollhouse was able to get.

Bent

This under-promoted comedy won my heart by the first episode. It’s not just the two leads, who have great chemistry, it’s the entire fun family formed by Alex’s daughter and sister, and Pete’s dad and crew. I couldn’t wait to see where their adventures would take them next.

March Madness: Winner – Psych!

After an arduous month-long war, USA Network’s Psych has emerged as the victor of the first annual TV Breakroom March Madness!

The head-to-head final against Castle was the most difficult battle of the tournament. Each show garnered more than 300 votes, but in the end, Psych won by a mere eight votes! (There were some instances of double voting on both sides – I hope the perpetrators were simply casting votes for family members and not stuffing the ballot box.)

Psych’s odds were helped by some noteworthy accounts tweeting about the match-up. The official Psych twitter, Dulé Hill (who plays Gus on the show), and Maggie Lawson (who plays Juliet), among others, helped spread the news. Some Castle twitter accounts got in on the buzz as well, including fan site Castle TV and Molly Quinn (who plays Alexis Castle).

To celebrate Psych’s win, I’ve updated the background of this site with some Shawn and Gus awesomeness.

The winner of the $15 Amazon gift card will be announced tomorrow. You still have time to leave comments anywhere on the site (one per post) to get entries for the drawing. Giveaway will close at 11:59 PM EDT tonight.

Because of the wonderful reception you all gave to this March Madness tournament, I’m planning to bring in other head-to-head match-ups throughout the year. Check back on April 2 for the debut of Monday Madness!

March Madness: Psych vs. Castle

After weeks of voting, it is down to the final match! Whenever I mentioned the Psych versus Community matchup, people groaned about making the choice, and the buzz made it my most-viewed post ever within a week! 163 brave souls made a decision, and Psych won, 91 to 72. Castle’s victory over Warehouse 13 was easier, as the SyFy show only managed to garner 4 votes.

And now, lovable rogue Nathan Fillion, who really is ruggedly handsome (and who is celebrating his birthday by raising money for charity: water – donate now!), along with the beautiful Stana Katic and the rest of the cast of Castle, goes up against the kings of comedy and 80s pop culture, the unstoppable James Roday and the smooth Dulé Hill. Shawn and Gus. Castle and Beckett. Which team do you want on your side?

The last battle begins. Which show will emerge victorious? It’s up to you! Vote in the comments below! And be sure to spread the word so your show can win!

Also remember, every comment (one per person per post, but you can comment on any or all of the hundreds of posts on this site) will give you one entry toward the $15 Amazon gift card!

Update: go here to see which show won!
