TV Olympics: Favorite Halloween Episode

The holidays are coming to TV Breakroom a little early this year, as today we kick a three-poll arc celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas episodes! First up on the calendar, it’s time to vote for the spooky and funny episodes that either give you great ideas for costumes and pranks or make you afraid to sleep at night.

If there are any great Halloween episodes I left out, please nominate them in the comments! Side note – I love the vampire/Spanish symmetry of the left and right pictures above.

Poll will be open for one week, and you can vote for up to 3 episodes. Be sure to check out our other ongoing Olympic polls and the medal results on our main event page!

TV Olympics: Favorite Crossover Episode

I love crossover episodes – when characters from one show guest star on another. Often, this happens when one show is spun off from another. Since the shows are already set in the same “universe,” it makes crossover episodes easier, and you get the opportunity to see characters interacting who haven’t for a while. Other times, two similar shows are on the same network when it’s decided to have them do a crossover event (which sometimes creates logical inconsistencies, like with the Warehouse 13 and Eureka crossovers – main cast from both shows had previously guest starred on the other show, as different characters!).

I will be awarding medals to both (or all three) shows in each crossover. If I’ve missed some great crossover episodes, please let me know in the comments! I purposely am not including “planted pilot” episodes (like “The Finder” episode of Bones, or the two-part “Legend” episode of NCIS that launched NCIS: Los Angeles). This poll is about two (or three) shows connecting after both shows exist.

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite crossover episodes. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

What's your favorite crossover episode? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Doctor Who (Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures) - The Stolen Earth and Journey's End (13%, 45 Votes)
  • NCIS: Los Angeles (NCIS) - Random on Purpose (11%, 40 Votes)
  • The Finder (Bones) - Little Green Men (11%, 38 Votes)
  • The Finder (Bones) - Bullets (9%, 30 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - I Will Remember You (8%, 28 Votes)
  • CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY - Bone Voyage, Hammer Down, The Lost Girls (7%, 24 Votes)
  • NCIS: Los Angeles (Hawaii Five-O) - Touch of Death (7%, 23 Votes)
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Angel) - Pangs (6%, 20 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Five By Five (5%, 19 Votes)
  • Eureka (Warehouse 13) - Crossing Over (5%, 16 Votes)
  • Warehouse 13 (Eureka) - Don't Hate the Player (4%, 14 Votes)
  • Hawaii Five-O (NCIS: Los Angeles) - Pa Make Loa (3%, 12 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - In the Dark (3%, 12 Votes)
  • Hawaii Five-O (NCIS: Los Angeles) - Ka Hakaka Maika'i (3%, 11 Votes)
  • Angel (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) - Orpheus (3%, 11 Votes)
  • Warehouse 13 (Eureka) - 13.1 (3%, 10 Votes)

TV Olympics: Most Annoying Teenage Character

I almost didn’t make this one of the mini-polls for this event, because how do I score this? Should I award negative medals for the characters that win? Award the bottom three?

In the end, I decided to award the top three, as usual. Why give an award for a negative attribute? Because most of the time, these characters are the one or two flies in the ointment of an otherwise awesome show. They seem all the more annoying because the rest of the characters are so great. Diehard fans of a show tend to be the most annoyed by these characters, as well, and to know how annoying a character is (and therefore vote for him/her), you most likely have to be already watching the show.

But I know there are tons of annoying teens who aren’t on this list yet, because there were only a few nominations in this category, and there are tons of teen-dominated shows I don’t watch. So come on, Glee fans and CW watchers – let me know which ones I missed!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can vote for up to 3 annoying teens.

Who is the most annoying teenage character? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Connor - Angel (16%, 29 Votes)
  • Dawn - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (16%, 29 Votes)
  • Harmony - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (13%, 25 Votes)
  • Elena - The Vampire Diaries (11%, 21 Votes)
  • Dalia - Suburgatory (9%, 16 Votes)
  • Caroline - The Vampire Diaries (8%, 15 Votes)
  • Kim - 24 (7%, 14 Votes)
  • Juliet - Ringer (6%, 11 Votes)
  • Cassidy "Beaver" - Veronica Mars (5%, 10 Votes)
  • Tyler - V (3%, 6 Votes)
  • Jackie - Veronica Mars (3%, 5 Votes)
  • Cassidy - Nash Bridges (2%, 3 Votes)
  • Dana - Homeland (2%, 3 Votes)

TV Olympics: Cutest Couple Name

We’re launching this year’s TV Olympics with the ever-so-cute (you can read that as sarcastic if you lean toward a more jaded view of the world) category of couple names! Often these are used by fans to promote their preferred pairing in shows with love triangles, but occasionally they’ve shown up in actual episodes:

The Big Bang Theory (The Zazzy Substitution):

Penny: Hey look, it’s Shamy.
Amy: Shamy?
Sheldon: Juvenile amalgamation of our names. Sheldon, Amy. Shamy.
Amy: Oh. I don’t like that. Don’t do that.

NCIS (Life Before His Eyes):

Tony: I remember you. Riva. No, Visa. No, no, no. Tiva!
Ziva: Ziva.

You can vote for up to 3 options, and the top 3 answers will receive medals for their shows! Poll closes in one week. Be sure to check out our other polls and results on the main event page!

Which is your favorite couple name? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Tiva (Tony and Ziva) - NCIS (28%, 456 Votes)
  • Densi (Deeks and Kensi) - NCIS: Los Angeles (18%, 284 Votes)
  • Caskett (Castle and Beckett) - Castle (15%, 235 Votes)
  • McAbby (McGee and Abby) - NCIS (11%, 186 Votes)
  • Shamy (Sheldon and Amy) - The Big Bang Theory (7%, 117 Votes)
  • Spuffy (Spike and Buffy) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (4%, 68 Votes)
  • Bangel (Buffy and Angel) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (4%, 58 Votes)
  • Shules (Shawn and Jules/Juliet) - Psych (3%, 52 Votes)
  • LoVe (Logan and Veronica) - Veronica Mars (3%, 45 Votes)
  • Chair (Chuck and Blair) - Gossip Girl (2%, 30 Votes)
  • Mikita (Michael and Nikita) - Nikita (2%, 27 Votes)
  • Clois (Clark and Lois) - Smallville (2%, 25 Votes)
  • Finchel (Finn and Rachel) - Glee (1%, 24 Votes)
  • Dair (Dan and Blair) - Gossip Girl (1%, 11 Votes)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Bad Girls

“Bad Girls” is the episode where Buffy taps into Faith’s mantra of  “I’m a Slayer and can do what I want,” with disastrous consequences. Since this is a Buffy-and-Faith episode, Willow and Xander only get a few scenes, and their humor is sorely missed for most of the episode.

Adding some hilarious moments is the introduction of Wesley, Buffy and Faith’s new Watcher (thanks to the Council ousting Giles at the end of “Helpless”).

Wesley:   It’s very nice to meet you.
Buffy:  Is he evil?
Wesley:  Evil?
Buffy:  The last one was evil.
Wesley:  Oh, yes. Gwendolyn Post. We all heard. No. Mr. Giles has checked my credentials rather thoroughly and phoned the Council, but I’m glad to see you’re on the ball as well. A good Slayer is a cautious Slayer.
Buffy:  Is he evil?
Giles:  Not in the strictest sense.

Knowing what he’ll become over on Angel, it’s almost painful to see how dorky and incompetent Wesley is at this point. His scenes with Giles are the best – both polishing their glasses, their overly polite jabs at each other, Wesley cowering in a corner while he sees Giles’ swordplay.

You also get more info on what exactly the Mayor is up to, combined with more of his 1950s mindset and propensity for cleanliness. He opens his cupboard of weapons and spells to retrieve a disposable wipe. He puts his evil plans on his to do list right with his meeting with the PTA.

Mayor Wilkins:  I just love the Family Circus! That P.J., he’s getting to be quite a handful.
Mayor Wilkins:  Well… I haven’t seen anything like this in, uh… Well, a good long while. Where’s the owner of these fine implements?
Trick:  The common term is ‘slain’. But I’ve been seeing this breed around. Are we expecting any trouble?
Mayor Wilkins:  Do you like Family Circus?
Trick:  I like Marmaduke.
Mayor Wilkins:  Oh! Eww! He’s always on the furniture. Unsanitary.
Trick:  Nobody can tell Marmaduke what to do. That’s my kinda dog.
Allan:  I like to read Cathy.

The main villains of this episode are rather boring – vampires with swords and a disgusting, fat demon that is so obviously fake I remember why it took me so long to get into this show. Also, additional side note, rewatching episodes makes it really easy to tell the difference between Sarah Michelle Gellar and the person doing her stunts.

The biggest impact on future episodes (aside from the Mayor becoming invincible), is Faith killing the deputy mayor, Allan, and doing her best not to care about it. Though I wonder why the police didn’t do a better job of trying to find the two girls who escaped custody by crashing a police car. Is Sunnydale really that big that they couldn’t find Buffy, especially after her earlier brushes with the law? Perhaps the crash fuddled their memory.

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Accents

This Monday Madness, we’re looking at (listening to?) awesome accents on TV! Some are real, some are pretend, but all help define the character who speaks them. Whether the accent is straight-laced British, sultry Spanish, or down-home Southern, and whether the character reinforces or subverts the accent’s stereotypes, these accents add flair and texture to their shows.

Special note: I’m choosing to feature accents that stand out in a show – aka the majority of characters in the show don’t have similar accents. Otherwise, accents from shows set in Great Britain, the southern US, India, etc. would make this poll extremely long.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite accents. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 30-some options on this list, I know there are TV characters with great accents I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (from live-action scripted shows only, please, and the accents should differ from the majority of the cast).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM July 16th.

Top 15 Favorite Non-Original Cast Members

As chosen by you, the voters, here are the top 15 favorite non-original cast members! I expanded this list from 10 to 15 because six of the top 10 were from two related shows. Feel free to consider #11-15 honorable mentions if you’re a top 10 purist. 🙂

The poll, while it didn’t quite receive the most votes, set a new record for most-viewed poll (and post) to date – and all in one week! Thanks to everyone who voted, and especially to those who spread the word about the poll!

Here are the results!

#15 – Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) from NCIS: Los Angeles

Monday Madness: Favorite Non-Original Cast Members

This Monday Madness, we’re looking at non-original cast members! Sometimes these characters replaced fan favorites who had left the show (for plot, personal, or business reasons), and often their presence upset the show’s dynamics. Many had a difficult time being accepted by long-time fans of the show, while with others it seemed like they had always been a part of the story. But, begrudgingly or with open arms, we learned to love most of these characters, and now you get to choose which ones are worthy of recognition!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite characters who joined their shows later on. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 50-some options on this list, I know there are dozens of characters I left out! You can nominate people I missed in the comments, and I may add them to the poll. I tried to limit this mostly to characters who joined after the complete first season, though with shorter-running shows I was more lenient. Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM June 11th.

UPDATE: this poll has ended. Vote for this week’s poll here: Favorite TV Dads.

ABC 2012-13 Primetime Schedule: ‘Revenge’ To Sunday, ‘Happy Endings,’ ‘Don’t Trust The B’ To Tuesday, ‘Last Man Standing’ To Friday – Ratings | TVbytheNumbers

ABC announced its fall schedule yesterday, with a few returning freshmen shows (and Happy Endings) moving, but most of the schedule staying the same (Once Upon a Time, Castle, and Suburgatory all stayed put).

It looks like most of the new shows I want to try out on ABC are being held for midseason – including comedies How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) and The Family Tools (both of their trailers look pretty decent and far funnier than the descriptions suggested) and perhaps drama Zero Hour (looks interesting, probably will depend on how busy I am).

For fall, I was planning to try out The Neighbors (which has taken Don’t Trust the B—-‘s spot on Wednesdays at 9:30, the returning comedy has moved to the same time on Tuesdays following Happy Endings), but the preview makes the show look pretty dumb. I don’t think it’ll last long, though the post-Modern Family slot might hold off the inevitable for a bit. Last Resort, on the other hand, looks great, and I hope it will fare well with the competitive 8/7c slot on Thursdays. 666 Park Street seems pretty much straight horror from the preview, so I’m likely to pass on it completely (I was hoping for something more along the lines of Grimm/Warehouse 13/Buffy – call me old-fashioned, but I prefer supernatural baddies that you can beat up and behead, with a cast who can quip to lighten the tension).

Looking back at ABC’s list of pilots, there are so many I wish had gotten picked up! Primarily Beauty and the Beast. At least there won’t be network wars over who can keep the title. And since Americana wasn’t picked up, Once Upon a Time’s Belle (Emilie de Ravin) can stay where she belongs. Gilded Lillys, Gotham, and Prairie Dogs also sounded good.

Monday Madness: Favorite Series or Season Finale

This week on Monday Madness, it’s time to vote for your favorite TV finales! This poll is for season and series finales of both cable and broadcast shows. But this week there’s a twist – for the first seven days, you can nominate your favorite finales and I’ll add them to the poll! I’m doing this because I got so few nominations, and I didn’t want to limit the poll to just my favorites.

This poll will be open for TWO weeks, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite finales. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! And as shows finish up their runs this year, you can nominate them for a spot on the poll!

Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this AND next week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM May 21th.
