Alphas Returns July 23rd

This Monday evening, fans of SyFy’s original shows will be treated to the return of two of their favorites: Warehouse 13 at 9/8c, and Alphas at 10/9c.

Alphas, which won TV Breakroom’s poll for favorite summer show, picks up 8 months after last year’s finale, with the team mostly disbanded. Dr. Rosen has been discredited and held by the government after revealing the existence of Alphas to the public. Check out the below season 2 trailer and episode clip, then keep reading for a list of guest stars and the season 2 poster!

As previously mentioned on this site, Erin Way will be joining the team as Kat, an Alpha who can easily pick up skills but suffers from rapid memory loss. New and returning guest stars scheduled to appear include:

Sean Astin plays Roland, an Alpha who has a bizarrely absorptive brain, which allows him to assume the memories of anyone close to him and then replay them like a tape recorder.

C. Thomas Howell portrays Eli Aquino, an intense Alpha with super-speed who is bent on revenge.

Lauren Holly guests as Senator Charlotte Burton, a government official with mysterious ties to a member of the Alphas team.

Summer Glau reprises her season one role as Skylar Adams, an Alpha who possesses a 200+ IQ and is an electronics mastermind.

Steve Byers plays John Bennett, a new member of the tactical team from the U.S. Department of Defense assigned to the Alphas team.

Kandyse McClure guests as Agnes, an attractive but distant Alpha with the ability to see into people’s minds merely by touching them.

John Pyper-Ferguson reprises his recurring role of Stanton Parish, the “Perfect Alpha.”

Kathleen Munroe returns as Dr. Rosen’s daughter, Dani, an empath Alpha who can transfer emotions from herself to others and is secretly a follower of Stanton Parish.

Mahershala Ali reprises his role as Nathan Clay the head of a tactical unit within the U.S. Department of Defense tasked with dealing with rogue Alphas.

Noah Reid portrays Adam Gordon a young man grief-stricken by the death of his young sister, Maggie. However, he becomes convinced she is alive and in need of his help.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Bad Girls

“Bad Girls” is the episode where Buffy taps into Faith’s mantra of  “I’m a Slayer and can do what I want,” with disastrous consequences. Since this is a Buffy-and-Faith episode, Willow and Xander only get a few scenes, and their humor is sorely missed for most of the episode.

Adding some hilarious moments is the introduction of Wesley, Buffy and Faith’s new Watcher (thanks to the Council ousting Giles at the end of “Helpless”).

Wesley:   It’s very nice to meet you.
Buffy:  Is he evil?
Wesley:  Evil?
Buffy:  The last one was evil.
Wesley:  Oh, yes. Gwendolyn Post. We all heard. No. Mr. Giles has checked my credentials rather thoroughly and phoned the Council, but I’m glad to see you’re on the ball as well. A good Slayer is a cautious Slayer.
Buffy:  Is he evil?
Giles:  Not in the strictest sense.

Knowing what he’ll become over on Angel, it’s almost painful to see how dorky and incompetent Wesley is at this point. His scenes with Giles are the best – both polishing their glasses, their overly polite jabs at each other, Wesley cowering in a corner while he sees Giles’ swordplay.

You also get more info on what exactly the Mayor is up to, combined with more of his 1950s mindset and propensity for cleanliness. He opens his cupboard of weapons and spells to retrieve a disposable wipe. He puts his evil plans on his to do list right with his meeting with the PTA.

Mayor Wilkins:  I just love the Family Circus! That P.J., he’s getting to be quite a handful.
Mayor Wilkins:  Well… I haven’t seen anything like this in, uh… Well, a good long while. Where’s the owner of these fine implements?
Trick:  The common term is ‘slain’. But I’ve been seeing this breed around. Are we expecting any trouble?
Mayor Wilkins:  Do you like Family Circus?
Trick:  I like Marmaduke.
Mayor Wilkins:  Oh! Eww! He’s always on the furniture. Unsanitary.
Trick:  Nobody can tell Marmaduke what to do. That’s my kinda dog.
Allan:  I like to read Cathy.

The main villains of this episode are rather boring – vampires with swords and a disgusting, fat demon that is so obviously fake I remember why it took me so long to get into this show. Also, additional side note, rewatching episodes makes it really easy to tell the difference between Sarah Michelle Gellar and the person doing her stunts.

The biggest impact on future episodes (aside from the Mayor becoming invincible), is Faith killing the deputy mayor, Allan, and doing her best not to care about it. Though I wonder why the police didn’t do a better job of trying to find the two girls who escaped custody by crashing a police car. Is Sunnydale really that big that they couldn’t find Buffy, especially after her earlier brushes with the law? Perhaps the crash fuddled their memory.

Suits Casts Elisabeth Hower as Mike’s Love Interest – TVLine

Well, since Mike Ross can’t tell Rachel (hmm, are their names a deliberate Friends reference?) his big secret, it looks like the show has decided he needs someone new in his life – or rather, his old childhood friend, Tess. Tess will be played by Elisabeth Hower (who was on MTV’s I Just Want My Pants Back), whose multi-episode arc will begin in Suits’ midseason finale.

Syfy’s Lost Girl Season 3 – Linda Hamilton Guest Star – TVLine

Chuck’s mom is back! Or the original Sarah Connor. Or the lead actress of the original Beauty and the Beast TV drama (which is receiving a reboot this fall).

However you know Linda Hamilton, her character on Lost Girl will be a legendary assassin, a role which will add a darker twist to her history of action characters. She’ll appear in season 3’s 10th episode.

2012 Reader Poll

This week, we’re going to do something a little different. As TV Breakroom gets geared up for its Olympic event (we still need more nominations!), I thought it would be beneficial to know what shows you all actually care about. So this will be our first annual reader poll!

The majority of the poll’s options are specific shows. There are also several “I” statements that I’d love for you to select if they are true for you. If you have any additional statements you’d like to add, please include them in the comments. Also, I’ve listed well over one hundred shows as options, but with that amount, it’s quite possible I missed a few, so please mention them in the comments! I included some past favorites and many of the new shows that will debut this fall.

You can select up to FIFTY answers below. Please vote for the shows you’d genuinely like to hear more about on this site. This isn’t a popularity contest. Feel free to share this poll with others, but don’t do it just to drum up support for your favorite show. I only want to get your opinions on what shows I should share more about here. There will be no prizes, no top 10 list. I want a broad view of what shows you enjoy, so please select at least several options.

I visit this site because/I would like to see more about: (Choose up to 50!)

Michael Clarke Duncan Hospitalized — Cardiac Arrest | TMZ.com

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who played Leo on The Finder, was hospitalized after having a heart attack. His girlfriend, reality star Omarosa Stallworth, performed CPR and saved his life. More details at the link below.

Michael Clarke Duncan Hospitalized — Cardiac Arrest | TMZ.com.

Update – 8/7/12 – I found the following update:

Michael Clarke Duncan remains hospitalized in Los Angeles more than three weeks after suffering a heart attack.

Publicist Joy Fehily said in a brief email statement Monday that the 54-year-old actor “was just moved from the intensive care unit, but remains hospitalized” following his July 13 heart attack.

“His family are firm believers in the power of prayer and have asked that you keep him in yours during this time,” the statement said.

Nikita at Comic-Con 2012 – TVLine

Nikita season 3 scoop! I’m kind of glad the first part of the season will be more episodic – yes, the show thrives on big conspiracies, but with all the turmoil at the end of season 2, it’ll be nice to step back and take a bit of breather. Ditto for some relationship peace between major characters. There will be enough going on with the transfer of power at Division, setting things in order, and figuring out hierarchy to keep plenty of tension in the first few episodes.

[VIDEO] Arrow Stars Katie Cassidy and Stephen Amell – TVLine

And the Comic-Con interviews keep coming in! Here we get a chat with Arrow’s two main actors, Stephen Amell (who plays Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow himself) and Katie Cassidy (who plays Oliver’s ex-girlfriend and the daughter of the police chief who’s after the vigilante Arrow).

I haven’t really seen these actors in anything (brief guest spots on New Girl for both of them is pretty much it), so my main takeaway from from this interview is that they both seem extremely likeable. This show seems to be hitting all the right notes – if they’ve gotten the actors right (aside from Susanna Thompson, they’re new to me so it’s hard to tell), all it needs is good dialogue and great plots.

Side note: the whole Katie and Stephen thing threw me off at first, since my brother’s name is Stephen and mine is Katie (both spelled exactly the same way too!).

Psych to Stage Musical Episode — Season 7 – TVLine

Fun video interview with James Roday, Dule Hill, and Psych series creator Steve Franks! They were tight-lipped about Henry’s fate, but offered a huge list of guest stars for the Clue-themed 100th episode. They also mentioned they weren’t able to get one actor for season 6, hence the delay, but they were also not able to get said person for season 7 either (my guess – they were hoping to stage a Tim Curry reappearance).

The trio also mentioned that the musical episode has been expanded to a two-hour movie event that will air on a different day than normal episodes, and will feature all-original songs. (The musical episodes I enjoyed the most – from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Community’s latest – tend to use original songs, so this is a plus in my book.)

Also, the rumor about a proposal appears to be true – I wonder if the show will pull a fast one on us, though, and have Lassie pop the question to his lady-love instead of Shawn doing so.

NCIS Trio Re-Sign for Season 10 and Beyond – TVLine

If you’ve been watching signing news for NCIS, you might have been a bit worried that the actors who play DiNozzo, McGee, and Abby hadn’t signed on for the next season. Given how season 9 ended, you might have been even more worried! But never fear, Michael Weatherly, Sean Murray, and Pauley Perrette will be back for season 10 AND 11, having just signed new two-year deals.

Monday Madness: Favorite TV Accents

This Monday Madness, we’re looking at (listening to?) awesome accents on TV! Some are real, some are pretend, but all help define the character who speaks them. Whether the accent is straight-laced British, sultry Spanish, or down-home Southern, and whether the character reinforces or subverts the accent’s stereotypes, these accents add flair and texture to their shows.

Special note: I’m choosing to feature accents that stand out in a show – aka the majority of characters in the show don’t have similar accents. Otherwise, accents from shows set in Great Britain, the southern US, India, etc. would make this poll extremely long.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite accents. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 30-some options on this list, I know there are TV characters with great accents I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (from live-action scripted shows only, please, and the accents should differ from the majority of the cast).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM July 16th.

Which character has your favorite accent? (Choose up to 10!)

‘Once Upon a Time’ scoop: ‘Hangover 2’ actress cast as legendary warrior | Inside TV | EW.com

Once Upon a Time has cast another Disney favorite female – Mulan! Jamie Chung (who I know best from the movie Sucker Punch) has been cast for the reoccurring role. She seems to have the right mix of sweetness and daring-do for the undercover warrior. No word yet on whether the mini-dragon Mushu will make an appearance. Also, both Mulan’s and Aurora’s significant others have yet to be cast – even if the writers want to pull off a Rumpelstiltskin-as-the-Beast-like twist, there aren’t too many current cast options (a bit hard to do a romantic backstory with a cricket).

EW added this update about her role:

Some more details about Mulan’s character. She’s described as having been trained in weaponry, tracking and riding, but “has a spirituality that enhances her tactical and strategic abilities. She has suffered past betrayals, so her trust is hard-won, but once she gives her oath of friendship her loyalty knows no boundaries.” Also, “when she falls in love, she falls hard.”
