Renew/Cancel News: More Suits, None of Them Made In Jersey, and No Next Caller

USA Network’s critically acclaimed legal drama Suits has been renewed for a 16-episode third season. The show, starring Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams, returns in January for the final 6 episodes of its second season.

CBS, however, canceled its new legal drama, Made In Jersey, after only two episodes. The Friday show was pulled from the schedule immediately, and both CSI:NY (now moved to 9PM) and Blue Bloods saw ratings upticks without the freshman drama.

With the first cancellation of the broadcast season out of the way, NBC unexpectedly canceled its midseason comedy Next Caller before a single episode aired. Apparently studio execs didn’t like the direction the Dane Cook-helmed comedy was headed, so they pulled the plug with no plans to air the 4 out of 6 episodes that were already filmed. Bad news if you were looking forward to the show, good news if you’re hoping another fall NBC comedy gets a full-season order.

TV Duos Bracket – Round Two, Day 24

Our final day of round two includes the matchup I’ve been anticipating (dreading?) since I first saw the pairings that came with the randomized list. Shawn and Gus of Psych and Troy and Abed of Community were the duos who inspired this entire event, so to have one of them eliminated this early is a bitter blow. But you have to choose – which is your favorite? Also today, the Gilmore Girls, Lorelai and Rory, face Harvey and Mike from Suits.

Our fifth matchup of round two just finished – be sure to check out the results and all our current matchups here! The winning duos will advance to round 3, which starts tomorrow! (P.S. Be sure to stop by our new show poll as well!)

You can find a full list of upcoming TV duos matchups here (edited to show all our round one eliminations!). Round two matchups are in burgundy. Each of the round two matchups will be open for 72 hours (3 days), so spread the word quickly so your favorite pairs will make it into the next round! TV Duos Bracket – Round One, Day 16

For our final day of round one, Harvey and Mike from Suits go up against visiting alien comedy duo Mork and Mindy! Also, mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory from Gilmore Girls face frenemies Jim and Dwight from The Office.

Our day 13 matchups just ended – be sure to check out the results and all our current matchups here! The winning duos will advance to the next round (which launches tomorrow!).

Reminder: While there are romantic pairs in this bracket, that’s only one possible aspect of a duo’s relationship. Duos have fun together, work well together, and/or have hilarious interactions. Simply put, they spark.

Suits Casts Elisabeth Hower as Mike’s Love Interest – TVLine

Well, since Mike Ross can’t tell Rachel (hmm, are their names a deliberate Friends reference?) his big secret, it looks like the show has decided he needs someone new in his life – or rather, his old childhood friend, Tess. Tess will be played by Elisabeth Hower (who was on MTV’s I Just Want My Pants Back), whose multi-episode arc will begin in Suits’ midseason finale.

Monday Madness: Favorite Summer Show

This Monday Madness, it’s time to bask in the delights of summer TV! As many broadcast shows go on hiatus for the summer, cable shows get a chance to shine! Also, we here in the US get the chance to experience some Canadian and British shows over the summer as well.

The selection of shows is based on US scheduling, and features shows within the past decade. I included some newer shows that had aired at least 3 episodes (giving Bunheads a little leeway since its third episode airs tonight). Not all of these shows air all their episodes in the summer – many have a split schedule, with the second half of seasons airing the following winter. Also, not all of these are still summer shows – for example, Psych has transitioned into a fall show, but since 5 of the past 6 seasons have started in July or August, I felt it qualified for the poll.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite summer shows. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10! Fans have used Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, forums, Reddit, blogs, and chatboxes to get the word out about past polls. Get creative!

Even though there are 30-some options on this list, I know there are TV shows I left out! You can nominate ones I missed in the comments until Thursday night, and I may add them to the poll (live-action scripted shows only, please).

Want more of a say in who makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter or like TV Breakroom on Facebook, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll. Please help out with nominations! There are only so many shows I can watch personally, so I’m counting on you to fill me in!

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM July 2nd.

What's your favorite summer show? (Choose up to 10!)

Monday Madness: Favorite New Show

This week on Monday Madness, it’s time to vote for your favorite new TV shows! This poll is for all live-action scripted shows that aired their first US episode between June 1, 2011 and April 30, 2012, and includes both broadcast and cable shows.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite new shows. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 50 options on this list, I know there are some shows I left out (I think there are only a few canceled shows or lesser-known cable shows left out this week)! As always, you can cast write-in ballots (for new live-action scripted shows only please) by leaving a comment. Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.

Next week’s poll will focus on favorite season and series finales. Please nominate your favorite finales by leaving a comment! In your comment, be sure to note the show, season, episode title, and not-too-spoilery descriptive phrase (think of what a promo for that episode would say). For example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 2, “Becoming, Part Two.” Aided by an unlikely ally, Buffy must face Angel to save the world.

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM May 7th.

UPDATE: This poll has closed. You can view the top ten list here.

Monday Madness: Who’s Your Favorite Quirky Character?

This round of Monday Madness, it’s time to look at those crazy characters in the shows we love. Often, they’re on the sidelines – not the main character, their romantic interest, or the person in charge. They provide comic relief in otherwise serious shows, or are a main source of laughter in comedies. They can be indispensable, evil, or hopelessly inept. But they refuse to fade into the background, and the shows wouldn’t be the same without them.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite quirky characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 40 options on this list, I know there are many great characters I left out! As always, you can cast write-in ballots by leaving a comment. Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.

Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM April 16th.

Person of Interest – A crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent, Reese, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire, Finch, to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice.

Two newer shows set in NYC – which will you vote for?

March Madness Comes to TV Breakroom

TV Breakroom is doing its own version of March Madness! And there’s a prize!

You will vote between two shows by leaving a comment with your choice on a bracket post (not on this post – though feel free to predict the winner here!). Every 6 days this month, I will close the comments, add up the totals, and set things up for the next stage of the bracket. I’ll link to all of the bracket posts here.

Every comment you leave throughout the month, whether to vote in the bracket or normal comments on other posts, will count as one entry toward a $15 Amazon gift card. Only one comment per post will count as an entry, and comments flagged as spam will be ignored. Contest begins on March 1, 2012 at 12:01 EST and ends March 31, 2012 at 11:59 EDT. Winner must provide email address and respond to winning notification within 3 days.

For a show to qualify, it had to air at least 5 new episodes between June 1, 2011 and February 29, 2012. It also has to be a US show (airing originally on a US broadcast or cable network, no matter where it was filmed), and I have to have seen at least 5 episodes of the show.

Here is the final match-up! The order in which shows would face each other was created by Random.org. Click the match-up to go to its bracket post and vote! Voting for this round ends around 1AM on March 31st, so get your votes in now!

Farewell to 2011

2011 has been a year of big changes for this blog. At the start of this year, I only had 3 posts and hadn’t even begun sharing the link. Now, I’m working on post 124 and get thousands of views every month.

As you can see, I’m also ending the year with a big change – a new layout. As much as I loved the look of the old layout, it was confusing for some and also probably hurting my chances of being found by search engines (with no text other than categories on the home page). I do plan to keep the same “wall of TV pics” look as my Twitter background, though. I’m still working through some of the kinks (like having to set images as featured images and adding read more links in ALL my old posts), so please let me know if you come across something that’s not working!
