5 Long-Shot TV Shows I Want To See Renewed

I’ve watched the ratings and predictions, and it seems like many of the shows I love are coming back next year. But there are a handful of shows that seem headed toward cancellation that I’m hoping against hope will beat the odds and get another shot. These aren’t shows that have been yanked from the schedule (like Free Agents), or that spent a lot of time in the danger zone, yet got renewed (like Fringe) or will likely be renewed (like Community). These are shows that most TV experts consider “bubble shows” or “long-shots” or “beyond hope.” I do think perhaps one of them will be fortunate enough to get a renewal; I’d be very happy if 2 or more made it.

UPDATE: I was correct. One – and only one – of these shows did get renewed: Nikita. Which if I’d had to guess which one might make it, I would have chosen.

Here are the shows, in no particular order, that in my perfect dream world would be coming back in 2012-2013:

Nikita

This is the show that got me to take the CW seriously for the first time. It perfectly filled the void left by Dollhouse’s cancellation (except for the mind-bending stuff). I love the “family of rogue agents” that has formed in this second season. Most recent spy shows have a lighter, humorous feel. This show manages to remain dark, but still be awesomely fun to watch.

Ringer

I started watching this show because of the intriguing premise and because I was curious to see what Sarah Michelle Gellar was like as not-Buffy. I stayed because of Ioan Gruffudd. I’d seen him in several movies (102 Dalmatians, Amazing Grace, Fantastic Four), but I didn’t fall in love with his acting until this show. It was nice to have Veronica Mars’ Jason Dohring around again too. The show was almost too twisty (I found myself saving up several episodes to watch so I could avoid agonizing cliffhangers), but it was very engaging and always kept me wanting more.

The Finder

My brother thought this show was on USA Network, and the humor on it matches the tone of that network perfectly. Walter could be Shawn Spencer’s long-lost cousin. I just love how zany and lighthearted and pure fun this show is. Plus it’s much more flexible than typical crime shows – finding things can take you anywhere. It’s also nice to have Bones characters dropping by occasionally.

Awake

I’ll admit, this was much more of a crime drama than a mind-twister than I was expecting. Still, it’s excellent, and piecing clues together from different worlds adds a great new dimension. I realize you can’t give away the entire “story behind the story” in the first season, but I really want to know more of what’s going on. Hopefully the show will get a second season (even if abbreviated) to dive into things, like Dollhouse was able to get.

Bent

This under-promoted comedy won my heart by the first episode. It’s not just the two leads, who have great chemistry, it’s the entire fun family formed by Alex’s daughter and sister, and Pete’s dad and crew. I couldn’t wait to see where their adventures would take them next.

Top 10 Favorite Long-Running Shows

Last week’s poll scored an impressive 8438 voters, and was the most-viewed poll yet! All those views caused the site to even crash at one point (I’ve enabled caching to prevent that problem in the future).

This poll’s nominations were the most controversial yet, with many complaints about great shows that had been left off (I’d severely underestimated the number of shows that have reached the season 7 benchmark), even after I’d tacked on 5 more shows to the initial 45. Speculative shows secured an early lead, but eventually the large fan base of crime shows made a significant dent in the top 10. Which show won? Keep reading!

Number 10: Criminal Minds

Top 10 Favorite Undead/Nonhuman Characters

Last week’s poll received a record 45,198 voters! However, the site pageviews did not justify that many votes. There’s a chance that the poll was embedded on different sites, but it’s more likely that the poll was hacked. It’s impossible to tell which votes are fraudulent, however. All of the top 5 characters seem to have some degree of auto-voting, but before the sudden spikes in voting, all of those characters were in the top 10. So this top 10 list is fairly accurate, however the actual order may be incorrect.

To prevent future auto-votes, I would have to subscribe to a voting system costing $300/year or more. So I would ask that if you want your favorite shows/characters to win a particular poll, you share the link on social networks and fan sites instead of automating votes. I would hate to have to discontinue Monday Madness because of cheating.

But back to the fun! Here are the winners of last week’s poll!

Number 10: Oz from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

TV’s Most Divisive Love Triangles — Gossip Girl, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, Vampire Diaries, Gilmore Girls, Revenge, 90210 – TVLine

Loved this fun slideshow! And the description is very apt – for the shows on the list that I have watched I have VERY distinct opinions on who characters should end up with. Which couples did you root/are you rooting for?

My choices (and yes, if you go to the slideshow, you can see which shows I don’t watch, or haven’t seen enough of to have an opinion on the love triangle):

Fred and Wesley (Angel), not Gunn

Spike and Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), not Angel (he goes with Cordy!)

Don’t like either Britta or Annie with Jeff – I like Britta and Troy, and Annie and Abed much better (Community)

Rory and Jess (Gilmore Girls), not Dean

Luke and Lorelai (Gilmore Girls), not Christopher

Barney and Robin (How I Met Your Mother), not Ted

Dwight and Angela (The Office), not Andy (he goes with Erin!)

Logan and Veronica (Veronica Mars), not Duncan

Hmm, Spike, Jess, Barney, Logan – I’m sensing a bad boy trend here!

Who are your choices? And are there any divisive love triangles TV Line left out? (I’m thinking of Dollhouse’s Echo/Paul/Mellie.) View the whole slideshow here:

Castle/Avengers Promo

At the end of last night’s Castle episode, the following clip (instead of a normal promo for the next episode) played.

It was so much fun to see Stark and Castle comparing themselves to each other. Glad that Fillion’s helping promote The Avengers, especially since he and Joss Whedon have done so much together: Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog, and now Much Ado About Nothing.

Monday Madness: Who’s Your Favorite Quirky Character?

This round of Monday Madness, it’s time to look at those crazy characters in the shows we love. Often, they’re on the sidelines – not the main character, their romantic interest, or the person in charge. They provide comic relief in otherwise serious shows, or are a main source of laughter in comedies. They can be indispensable, evil, or hopelessly inept. But they refuse to fade into the background, and the shows wouldn’t be the same without them.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite quirky characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!

Even though there are 40 options on this list, I know there are many great characters I left out! As always, you can cast write-in ballots by leaving a comment. Now we know what happened to all of the old textbooks from UC Sunnydale. : buffy

Considering the lack of crossover between people who worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and people who worked on Community (just a handful of undistinctive guest stars – most notably, the old lady from “Doublemeat Palace” voices Pierce’s mom; some stunt people, and a few miscellaneous crew), this Easter egg is even more awesome. Though as much as Troy and Abed love Firefly, it’s likely they’ve checked out other Joss Whedon-related stuff.

Julie Benz, Jaime Murray Join Syfy Drama Defiance

Warehouse 13 meets Joss Whedon’s Buffy/Angel as both Jaime Murray (who played H.G. Wells on Warehouse 13) and Julie Benz (who played Darla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) have been cast in SyFy’s drama Defiance. If that’s not cool enough, the futuristic frontier vibe screams Firefly, although this time the setting is a war-ravaged Earth cohabited by humans and aliens. Definitely something I want to check out!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – The Zeppo

I figured it was about time I got back to my Buffy episode reviews! “The Zeppo” is one of my favorites, so I kept putting it off since I wanted to do a thorough job on the review. And then the fall season started, and I was way too busy juggling new episodes to even think about rewatching old ones, unless I was introducing friends/family to shows.

This episode follows a different format than typical ones. Most TV episodes have several storylines going on at once, with the one having the highest stakes being the focus and getting the most screen time, while one or more minor storylines often feature supporting cast and add humor, character development, and plot details to supplement the main story. With “The Zeppo,” the formula is switched. Xander’s side story of trying to be cool and prove he’s not useless becomes the focus, and Buffy and the rest of the gang stopping a near-apocalypse gets only a handful of scenes.

Buffy:  Xander, one of these days, you’re gonna get yourself hurt.
Faith:  Or killed.
Buffy:  Or both. A-and, you know, with the pain and the death, maybe you shouldn’t be leaping into the fray like that. M-maybe you should be…fray-adjacent.
Xander:  Excuse me? Who, at a crucial moment, distracted the lead demon by allowing her to pummel him about the head?
Faith:  Yeah. That was real manly how you shrieked and all.
Xander:  I think you’ll find that was more of a bellow.
Buffy:  Uh, what do we do with the trio here? Should we burn them?
Willow:  I brought marshmallows.
(Surprised looks.)
Willow:  Occasionally, I’m callous and strange.

In the end, you don’t really know what went on with the Hellmouth opening again. You glimpse a few mid-action scenes (as if you were flipping through channels during commercials), and hear the gang’s comments afterwards. And you get a few funny bits like this one:

Willow:  Where are you going?
Giles:  Um, to try and contact the Spirit Guides. They exist out of time, but have knowledge of the future. I have no idea if they will respond to my efforts, but I have to try. All we know is that the fate of the entire world rests on it. (looks into the doughnut box) Did you eat all the jellies?
Buffy:  Did you want a jelly?
Giles:  I always have a jelly. I’m always the one that says ‘let’s have a jelly in the mix.’
Willow:  We’re sorry. Buffy had three.

But you know exactly what went on with Xander’s evening. I particularly like the scene pictured above because of the weapon’s name. There are other named weapons in the Whedonverse (Mr. Pointy and Jayne’s Vera spring to mind), but this one shares my name:

Xander:  Yeah. Great knife. Although I think, uh, it may technically be a, a sword.
Jack:  She’s called ‘Katie’.
Xander:  You gave it a girl’s name. How very serial killer of you. Listen, I think we should be going.
Jack:  Are you scared? (traces the tip of the blade around Xander’s neck)
Xander:  Would that make you happy?
Jack:  Your woman looking on, you can’t stand up to me? Don’t you feel pathetic?
Xander:  Mostly I feel Katie.
Jack:  You know what the difference between you and me is?
Xander:  Again… Katie’s springing to mind.

Much as I hate zombies, the whole story with Jack’s dead friends is hilarious. When Xander realizes they’re making a bomb, his interrogation technique (and subsequent decapitation) is exactly what I would picture him doing.

I love how in the end, Xander saves his friends by playing chicken with Jack and the bomb, and proving that he’s not afraid. And none of the Scooby Gang finds out that he saved their lives – Xander knows, and that’s enough for him.

Netflix less about flicks, more about TV – latimes.com

Interesting look at how Netflix’s model has switched from almost exclusively movies to more than 60% of videos streamed being TV shows. I especially loved the insight on how serialized shows (ones that focus on an overarching story and are best watched in order) are doing well with Netflix, as new viewers can start from the beginning and watch every episode in order. And the service makes TV marathons easy: I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Bones, and Veronica Mars (latter unfortunately not still available via streaming) in rapid succession thanks to Netflix, plus I’m using the service to get my friend hooked on How I Met Your Mother.

I’m also excited about Netflix’s leap into original programming. So far they’ve bought US rights to foreign shows (like Lilyhammer), funded new shows, and ordered new episodes of cult favorites (Arrested Development). This article hints that there are more on the way! What show would you like Netflix to bring back?
