Monday Madness: Who’s Your Favorite Quirky Character?
This round of Monday Madness, it’s time to look at those crazy characters in the shows we love. Often, they’re on the sidelines – not the main character, their romantic interest, or the person in charge. They provide comic relief in otherwise serious shows, or are a main source of laughter in comedies. They can be indispensable, evil, or hopelessly inept. But they refuse to fade into the background, and the shows wouldn’t be the same without them.
This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 10 of your favorite quirky characters. Be sure to spread the word so your favorites will make it into the top 10!
Even though there are 40 options on this list, I know there are many great characters I left out! As always, you can cast write-in ballots by leaving a comment. Want more of a say in what makes it onto the poll each week? Be sure to follow me on Twitter, since I usually ask for nominations for the next Monday Madness the weekend before the new poll.
Without further ado, here’s the poll for this week’s Monday Madness! Voting ends around 1AM April 16th.
Update: voting is over, but you can vote on this week’s poll here! Winners’ post here.

Now we know what happened to all of the old textbooks from UC Sunnydale. : buffy
Considering the lack of crossover between people who worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and people who worked on Community (just a handful of undistinctive guest stars – most notably, the old lady from “Doublemeat Palace” voices Pierce’s mom; some stunt people, and a few miscellaneous crew), this Easter egg is even more awesome. Though as much as Troy and Abed love Firefly, it’s likely they’ve checked out other Joss Whedon-related stuff.

Fans Find New Ways to Save Their Favorite Shows – Today’s News: Our Take | TVGuide.com
Great discussion of the lengths fans go to save TV shows, and how they are starting for find ways that actually work. Mailing stuff to the studio is on the decline (despite Terra Nova’s dinosaurs), while social media is making more of an impact.

TV Ratings Thursday: ‘Big Bang Theory’ Doesn’t Dent ‘Community;’ ‘Awake,’ ‘Missing’ Keep Sliding, As Most Shows Decline – Ratings | TVbytheNumbers
People who were worried about The Big Bang Theory affecting Community’s ratings can relax a little – Community’s rating is exactly what it was last week, when CBS was airing basketball. Even better, it was rated higher than 30 Rock, which follows Community in a less competitive timeslot.
Not so good are the ratings for NBC’s Awake, and ABC’s Missing. I’ve only caught one episode of Missing so far and thought it was decent, but I’ll be really sad to see Awake go. It puts such a cool twist on a crime drama (would have loved to see it following NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles on Tuesdays on CBS instead of Unforgettable).

Spoilers on Bones, Suburgatory, Mad Men — Spoiler Alert! Web Series – TVLine
The Spoiler Alert! web series is back, this time with discussion on AMC’s The Walking Dead season finale and Mad Men season premiere. Suburgatory’s Jeremy Sisto dishes on his Clueless co-star Alicia Silverstone joining the show for several episodes, and all the nods to the movie they were able to add in. And then Community’s Gillian Jacobs and Happy Endings’ Adam Pally pre-enact the birth scene from the next episode of Bones!

Jason O’Mara Joins CBS Ralph Lamb Pilot, Salli Richardson is Downwardly Mobile – TVLine
Well, it looks like Terra Nova stars aren’t holding out much hope for a Netflix revival, as another one has joined a pilot (for a show I very much doubt will make it to series). In my opinion, Terra Nova would be a terrible choice for Netflix’s initial resurrections. It doesn’t have enough of a cult following. In fact, this article lists a bunch of scifi-bent shows that would be a better choice for the digital streaming service.
Netflix succeeds because of the classics – shows, whether new or old, that people will continue watching and talking about for years to come. Terra Nova doesn’t have that yet, and likely never will. Arrested Development does, as do many of the shows mentioned on the list above.
In other news, Eureka’s Salli Richardson and Missourian Greg Cromer (who you may remember as Community’s “doctor who is so skilled at pottery that he makes Jeff jealous” – before he turns into a zombie, that is) will play a rich couple turned poor on Downwardly Mobile.
March Madness: Psych vs. Community
It is down to the Final Four, and the choices are getting harder! Now shows on four different channels – two broadcast, two cable – compete for a coveted spot in the final match. Psych won a heated battle (35-21) against Rizzoli & Isles, and for fans of delicious flavor, they can almost taste victory. But they face a formidable opponent: Community, fresh off a 8-to-4 triumph over the freshman fairy tale Once Upon a Time, and season-high ratings for their mid-season return, won’t be giving their USA Network neighbor an inch.
And in case you’ve been living in a bubble and don’t remember what these two shows are about:
Psych features novice sleuth Shawn Spencer (James Roday), who is hired by the police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers that help solve crimes. With this assistance of his reluctant best friend, Gus (Dule Hill), the duo take on a series of complicated cases.
Community features smart-aleck lawyer Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), whose education is deemed void by the bar and is forced to attend a local community college with an extremely eclectic staff and student body.
Round 4 will end around 1AM EDT March 25th, so vote by leaving a comment with your choice below! Also, don’t forget to vote on Warehouse 13 vs. Castle!
Update: Psych won, by a mere 19 votes! Go vote for it against Castle here.
Ratings — Community Returns With Wins Over American Idol
True, the win over American Idol was just with Adults 18-34 ratings in the common half hour, but it’s still amazing! The 2.2 rating was a season high for the show. Last week, 30 Rock only managed a 1.4 in that slot. True, it was up against The Big Bang Theory, but this week Community was up against the start of March Madness basketball and ABC’s premiere of Missing.
Grimm Renewed For Season 2 — NBC
By watching the ratings, I was pretty sure this show would get renewed, but it’s nice to see the early pickup. With Chuck ending this year, the only other veteran shows I watched on NBC were Community and The Office. Now there’s Grimm, Smash, and Awake. In fact, NBC was the only channel I watched last night!
RELEVANT Magazine – Q&A with Yvette Nicole Brown of ‘Community’
Great interview with Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley on NBC’s Community. She talks about the show’s return, getting through the hiatus, and what it’s like being a Christian and playing a Christian on broadcast TV.
I think it’s great that I’m playing a Christian with flaws because as every Christian knows we are flawed. Christ’s justice is manifest in our weakness, so if we had everything together there would be no need for Him. I like playing a character where it’s obvious why she wears a cross every week, because she’s crazy. It’s great that I get to play someone who really mirrors a real Christian, and she’s learning. She’s not as judgmental as she was when the show began and is more loving as a true Christian should be.

Community Cast Previews Season 3 Return
Community is returning in about one hour (for this half of the US, at least), and here’s a quick look at what you’ll see in upcoming episodes. I’m actually most excited about the Ocean’s 7 episode – Troy and Abed have to spoof Danny and Rusty!
Comedy Central Acquires Off-Net Rights to ‘Community’ – Ratings | TVbytheNumbers
Most shows need 88 episodes to get syndicated, but Community has defied the odds and already picked up an off-net rights deal with Comedy Central halfway through season 3. Season 4 is looking more and more likely, but hopefully increased exposure for the show will lead to six seasons and a movie!
