March Madness: Psych vs. Community

It is down to the Final Four, and the choices are getting harder! Now shows on four different channels – two broadcast, two cable – compete for a coveted spot in the final match. Psych won a heated battle (35-21) against Rizzoli & Isles, and for fans of delicious flavor, they can almost taste victory. But they face a formidable opponent: Community, fresh off a 8-to-4 triumph over the freshman fairy tale Once Upon a Time, and season-high ratings for their mid-season return, won’t be giving their USA Network neighbor an inch.

And in case you’ve been living in a bubble and don’t remember what these two shows are about:

Psych features novice sleuth Shawn Spencer (James Roday), who is hired by the police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers that help solve crimes. With this assistance of his reluctant best friend, Gus (Dule Hill), the duo take on a series of complicated cases.

Community features smart-aleck lawyer Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), whose education is deemed void by the bar and is forced to attend a local community college with an extremely eclectic staff and student body.

Round 4 will end around 1AM EDT March 25th, so vote by leaving a comment with your choice below! Also, don’t forget to vote on Warehouse 13 vs. Castle!

Update: Psych won, by a mere 19 votes! Go vote for it against Castle here.

March Madness: How I Met Your Mother vs. Castle

HIMYM barely won over The Finder as an out-of-place comment broke the tie. Person of Interest came out ahead initially, but a huge outpouring of fan support gave Castle the victory amid over 100 comments left! Now two NYC-based shows with strong Joss Whedon ties battle it out for a spot in the final four!

How I Met Your Mother is about a man in the year 2030 who begins telling his kids about how he met his wife via flashbacks from the future. The story starts in the year 2005, when then twenty-seven year old architect Ted Mosby was spurred on to want to get married after lawyer Marshall Eriksen and kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin, his best friends, got engaged. Ted’s new quest in life was much to the dismay of his womanizing friend, Barney Stinson. But soon after Marshall and Lily’s engagement, Ted believed that his life mate was going to be news reporter and aspiring news anchor Robin Scherbatsky, who, despite having had a romantic relationship with her after this time, ended up being who the kids know as their “Aunt” Robin.

Castle – After a serial killer imitates the plots of his novels, successful mystery novelist Richard “Rick” Castle (Nathan Fillion gets permission from the Mayor of New York City to tag along with an NYPD homicide investigation team for research purposes. He partners with Detective Kate Beckett, and uses a fictionalized version of her as the main character of his new series.

Will you go with Willow or Malcolm Reynolds? Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer? Wesley Wyndham-Pryce or Firefly Easter eggs? Vote below, and be sure to vote in the other matchups!

March Madness: Burn Notice vs. Warehouse 13

Another close race with a misplaced tiebreaker let Burn Notice beat out Suburgatory, and Bones put up a decent but ultimately futile fight against Warehouse 13. So now it’s time to decide between a Florida- and a South Dakota-based team, though to be fair, both offer a decent amount of globetrotting.

Burn Notice – After he’s set up and fired from the CIA, a special ops agent puts his training to use by doing a variety of dangerous and undercover jobs for people as he tries to figure out who betrayed him.

Warehouse 13 – After saving the life of the President in Washington D.C., a pair of U.S Secret Service agents are whisked away to a covert location in South Dakota that houses supernatural objects that the Regents, an Authority above and outside any government, have collected over the centuries. Their new assignment: retrieve any lost objects and investigate reports of new ones.

Which show has your vote? Sound off below, and be sure to vote for the other matchups!

March Madness: Community vs. Once Upon a Time

Two VERY close races. The competing shows Community and The Big Bang Theory ended in a tie on its official post, but a misplaced vote gave the win to Community (which returns this week!). Newbie Once Upon a Time triumphed over popular NCIS by just a few votes. Now, two shows that couldn’t be more different face each other. (Trying to think of something they have in common . . . occasional capes, perhaps?)

Community features smart-aleck lawyer Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), whose education is deemed void by the bar and is forced to attend a local community college with an extremely eclectic staff and student body.

Once Upon a Time – There is a town in Maine, where every storybook character you’ve even known is trapped by an evil curse. Trapped in time, with all their happy endings stolen, they don’t remember who they are or where they came from. Only one can break the spell.

Which show has your vote? Comment below, and be sure to check out the other matches here!

Update: Community won! Vote for it here.

March Madness: Rizzoli & Isles vs. Psych

Leverage fought valiantly, garnering six votes to Rizzoli & Isles’ seventeen, but the female duo’s fan base won out. And White Collar only got one vote against fellow USA Network show Psych. Now two girls and two guys battle to solve the murder first – or at least win your vote!

Rizzoli & Isles follows Boston detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and medical examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), complete opposites and good friends who solve crimes and bust some of Boston’s most notorious criminals.

Psych features novice sleuth Shaun Spencer (James Roday), who is hired by the police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers that help solve crimes. With this assistance of his reluctant best friend, Gus (Dule Hill), the duo take on a series of complicated cases.

The CW – Pilots and Cancellations for 2012-2013

I promised I’d continue the discussion on TV show pilots in the future, and now, a month later, I’m finally getting to it. But what a difference a month can make! Many of these pilots have now signed major cast, so we can get a far better idea of what the show will be like.

And for every show a network picks up, another must depart, so we’ll be looking at which shows aren’t likely to get another season. Since scripted shows are this site’s focus, I’ll ignore any changes to unscripted shows and assume they’ll have the same amount of hours next year.

To make things a little easier as I get started, I’m beginning with the lowest-rated broadcast network with limited hours, the CW.

For 2011-2012, the CW has nine regular-season scripted shows, all hour-long dramas. Three are freshmen (Ringer, The Secret Circle, Hart of Dixie), and one is in its final season (One Tree Hill). Ringer is heading for cancellation, and Hart of Dixie isn’t far behind. Sophomore Nikita isn’t much better, but being on a Friday may give the show some leeway, and Gossip Girl hasn’t left the danger zone.

That means there will be 3-4 (or even 5 if the network wants to make drastic changes to improve in the demo) slots open for new shows next season. The CW has ordered 8 pilots, and most look like strong contenders.

Arrow

A modern retelling of DC Comic’s Green Arrow, this show has a strong cast and good buzz (especially for a superhero that looks like a caricatured Robin Hood). Stephen Amell stars as Oliver Queen, with Susanna Thompson (Kings) and Willa Holland as his mother and sister, Katie Cassidy and Paul Blackthorne as his love interest and her father, and Colin Donnell (Pan Am) as his best friend. As I mentioned earlier, there’s a dearth of superhero shows, which may give Arrow an extra edge to make it to series. And having a Warehouse 13 vet helping helm the show should only help.

Beauty and the Beast

A pretty odd choice for a remake show, but since it’s only “loosely based” on the 1980s procedural and stars Kristin Kreuk and Austin Basis, the show may do okay. Since Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale, I’m going to at least check this out if it makes it to series. Fairy tales are in right now, but I have no clue what direction this show plans to take.

The Carrie Diaries

I had no interest in this show whatsoever until I heard it cast AnnaSophia Robb, whose acting I’ve loved since Bridge to Terebithia. I still don’t think I’ll watch. Sex and the City plus the 1980s? Ugh. And even if it does make it to series based off the other show’s (and movies’) popularity, the demographic that would likely watch it aren’t going to be very familiar with a show that aired a decade ago.

Cult

Mysterious disappearances surrounding a cult TV show? Sorry, but I need more than a minor character from Veronica Mars (Alona Tal) showing up to perk my interest.

First Cut

Medical shows don’t really interest me, and I’m not familiar with Justin Hartley (the CW show Smallville’s Green Arrow) or Mamie Gummer. Michael Rady I know as Kostas on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and I don’t even remember Kelly McCreary’s brief appearances on White Collar. Working at a hospital being like high school all over again could work, but I fear the concept would either disappear or be overplayed.

Joey Dakota

Romantic time-travel musical sounds a bit far-fetched, and the name of the show sounds like a cross between the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana. I’m not familiar with Amber Stevens or Leah Renee, the only cast announcements made so far. I’ll check it out for the novelty if it makes it to series, but I think it’s unlikely.

The Selection

“An epic romance set 300 years in the future which centers on a poor young woman who is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads.” That was intriguing enough. Then I found out it was being headed up by Angel and Dollhouse scribes Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain. I’m not familiar with leads Aimee Teegarden or Ethan Peck, and I’ve only seen Sean Patrick Thomas in a few episodes of Ringer. Still, I’m definitely rooting for this one, even though many are claiming it sounds too similar to The Hunger Games.

Shelter

The Help. New England resort. J.J. Abrams. That’s pretty much all that’s known about this show so far.

If I had my choice on which pilots make it to series, I’d pick The Selection, Arrow, and Beauty and the Beast (in that order). Based on buzz and cast, I’m guessing First Cut and The Carrie Diaries are more likely to be picked up than the remaining Cult, Joey Dakota, and Shelter.

What shows do you think the CW should pick up, and which shows should it cancel?

Update: cancellation and pickup verdicts for the CW here!

March Madness: Person of Interest vs. Castle

Two USA Network shows bit the dust as Person of Interest squeezed past Suits, and Castle knocked out Covert Affairs. Now the two NYC-based procedurals, both featuring civilians with unorthodox relationships with cops, face off.

Person of Interest – A crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent, Reese, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire, Finch, to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice.

Which show are you rooting for? Vote in the comments! And be sure to check out the other March Madness match-ups!

Update: Castle won! It’s up against How I Met Your Mother now, so keep voting here!

March Madness: The Finder vs. How I Met Your Mother

Struggling freshman show The Finder (which will likely be canceled if the Friday factor doesn’t come into play) beat the steady Blue Bloods, and veteran How I Met You Mother passed up its Monday night companion, 2 Broke Girls.

The Finder – Walter Sherman is an Iraq War vet who suffered brain damage in an IED explosion, which triggered the ability to “find” things: he sees connections between seemingly unrelated events, objects or people that other investigators would miss. Walter is assisted by his “legal adviser” and bar owner Leo Knox, US Deputy Marshal Isabel Zambada, and teen parolee and thief Willa Monday, who is serving her probation with the team.

Which motley crew gets your vote? Let me know in the comments!

March Madness: Bones vs. Warehouse 13

Bones’ FBI triumphed over NCIS: Los Angeles, and Warehouse 13 didn’t give SyFy companion Alpha (featuring Bones’ Ryan Cartwright) one vote.

Bones – Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is a highly skilled forensic anthropologist in Washington, DC. FBI Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) calls on her to assist with investigations when the standard methods of identifying a body are useless – when the remains are badly decomposed, burned or destroyed beyond recognition.

So do you want Booth and Brennan or Pete and Myka? Vote below!

March Madness: Suburgatory vs. Burn Notice

Freshman comedy Suburgatory beat on-its-final-lap House, and the sunny skies of Miami’s Burn Notice won over dreary Scranton’s Office (and even some of their employees are currently sojourning in Florida!).

Suburgatory – Single dad George Altman moves his 15-year-old daughter Tessa out of New York City and into the suburbs, where she’s horrified by plastic moms, superficial peers, and nosy neighbors.

Burn Notice – After he’s set up and fired from the CIA, a special ops agent puts his training to use by doing a variety of dangerous and undercover jobs for people as he tries to figure out who betrayed him.

Spies or suburbanites? Vote in the comments below!

Update: A comment on the main March Madness post broke the tie below, and Burn Notice has gone onto round three!

March Madness: NCIS vs. Once Upon a Time

NCIS beat out the vampires, werewolves, and ghosts of Being Human, and Once Upon a Time unanimously won over Eureka – poor SyFy! Now TV’s most viewed drama faces a popular and magical freshman – which will advance to the next round?

NCIS is an action drama with liberal doses of humor that focuses on the sometimes complex dynamics of a team forced to work together in high-stress situations. These special agents travel the globe to investigate all crimes – from murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines – with Navy or Marine Corps ties.

Once Upon a Time – There is a town in Maine, where every storybook character you’ve even known is trapped by an evil curse. Trapped in time, with all their happy endings stolen, they don’t remember who they are or where they came from. Only one can break the spell.

Will you back the veteran or the rookie? Post your favorite in the comments!

March Madness: Community vs. The Big Bang Theory

Two competing comedies got all the votes against CW dramas Nikita and Ringer. But now it’s time to decide: what will you watch at 8/9c Thursday nights, CBS’s The Big Bang Theory or NBC’s Community? More importantly, which one will advance to round three of March Madness?

Community features smart-aleck lawyer Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), whose education is deemed void by the bar and is forced to attend a local community college with an extremely eclectic staff and student body.

The Big Bang Theory – A woman who moves into an apartment next door to two brilliant but socially awkward physicists shows them how little they know about life outside of the laboratory.

Vote and send your favorite onward!

March Madness: White Collar vs. Psych

Poor Chuck. The show didn’t get one vote against White Collar! And Psych easily beat out newbie Grimm. USA Network triumphed over NBC, but how will two USA shows fare against each other?

White Collar criminal Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) agrees to help the FBI catch other white collar criminals using his expertise as an art and securities thief, counterfeiter and racketeer.

Psych features novice sleuth Shaun Spencer (James Roday), who is hired by the police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers that help solve crimes. With this assistance of his reluctant best friend, Gus (Dule Hill), the duo take on a series of complicated cases.

March Madness: Leverage vs. Rizzoli & Isles

Leverage easily defeated Supernatural, but Rizzoli & Isles had the largest landslide victory of round one, sending New Girl off crying. Now the two champions face each other from opposite sides of the law.

Leverage teams up a former insurance investigator with four criminals who have specialized thieving, hacking, fighting, and grifting skills and together they help ordinary citizens by robbing the wealthy criminals, corrupt businessmen, and crooked politicians who ruined their lives.

Rizzoli & Isles follows Boston detective Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and medical examiner Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander), complete opposites and good friends who solve crimes and bust some of Boston’s most notorious criminals.

Which team do you want on your side? Leave your choice in the comments!

Covert Affairs – A young CIA trainee, Annie Walker, is sent out into the field to work at the Domestic Protection Division (DPD). August “Auggie” Anderson, a blind tech operative, is Annie’s guide in her new life. Annie’s cover story is that she works in Acquisitions at the Smithsonian Museum.
