TV Olympics: Favorite Father/Son Duos

For this round of our TV Olympics (our final poll will launch Sunday), we’re looking at father/son duos! There are a few trios in this poll, since for several of these dads, the bond between both sons seemed equally strong. For others, one father/son relationship seemed more dynamic that the other (and hence more worthy of the term “duo”).

This poll is for actual fathers (biological and adoptive, but not simply father-figures), and since the relationship between dad and son is a key part of the poll, they need to have appeared in a number of episodes together, and infant sons are excluded. If you know of any duos you believe should be in the poll, leave their names and the show in a comment!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite dad/son duos. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

What's your favorite father/son duo? (Choose up to 3!)

  • John and Dean/Sam - Supernatural (27%, 269 Votes)
  • Henry and Shawn - Psych (27%, 264 Votes)
  • Walter and Peter - Fringe (15%, 144 Votes)

Joss Whedon to direct ‘Avengers’ sequel – latimes.com

The world of geekdom (and probably much of the rest of the world) can breathe a huge sign of relief – Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct The Avengers sequel! There was hardly any doubt they would offer the job to him, the doubt was whether Joss wanted to tackle another big Hollywood film or focus his time on other projects.

The article linked below says the release date for Avengers 2 will likely be 2015, since Captain America: The Winter Soldier (first I’ve seen of Captain America 2‘s official title) and Guardians of the Galaxy (which is said to tie in to the big bad revealed at the end of The Avengers) will both release in 2014.

But one of the coolest parts of the article? This sentence:

He also said Whedon is developing a Marvel-themed, live-action television series for ABC.

Remember when TV Breakroom first reported ABC was looking at developing an Avengers-adjacent show? I said this:

Joss Whedon. Superheroes. That’s all you need really. Look what he did with Buffy. He could make even something like Ant-Man work.

Yeah, I’m pretty happy now. Joss Whedon is returning to TV!

TV Olympics: Favorite TV Animal

For this round of our TV Show Olympics, we’re looking at animals on TV! Whether furry or scaly, they often add color and dimension to the TV shows of which they are a part. This poll does not include characters who appear human most of the time but also can show up as animals – werewolves, shapeshifters, etc., but mythological animals are allowed.

For an animal to qualify for this poll, it has to appear in more than one episode of the show (which left out some nominated favorites from Psych, Supernatural, and NCIS). As usual, only live-action, scripted shows are included. If you have additional nominations, please put them in the comments!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite TV animals. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

Alphas – Season 2, Episode 3 “Alpha Dogs” Preview

TV Breakroom reported several months ago that a new Alpha was joining the Alphas team this season, and Monday’s episode “Alpha Dogs” introduces her character. Here’s a brief synopsis of the episode:

On the third episode of the second season of Alphas, Erin Way joins the cast as Kat, a young loner whose Alpha ability allows her to pick up any skill at a glance and while her skills are permanent, her personal memories are short-lived.   Also, a mysterious murder leads Harken (Malik Yoba) and Hicks (Warren Christie) to an underground Alphas-style fight club.  Meanwhile, Dr. Rosen (David Strathairn) traces the existence of Stanton Parish (guest star John Pyper-Ferguson) back to 1864, and Parish’s Alpha ability is witnessed for the first time via a flashback to the American Civil War.  Alphas airs Mondays at 10PM ET/PT only on Syfy.

Take a look at this sneak peak:

TV Olympics: Favorite Switched-Body Performance

This round of the TV Olympics, we’re looking at switched-body performances! It’s typical of many science fiction and fantasy shows to have an episode or two when characters switch consciousness with each other. Usually it’s a one-to-one ratio, but other episodes get more creative – three characters switching, one character played by two actors, etc.

This isn’t one actor playing two characters (if that is more of a long-term thing, it probably fits into our dual roles poll), it’s where one actor plays a role typically portrayed by another actor (or a new enemy), and usually for only one or two episodes.

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite switched-body performance? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Jared Padalecki as Lucifer - Supernatural (31%, 352 Votes)
  • Matt Cohen as Michael - Supernatural (22%, 252 Votes)
  • Joanne Kelly as Pete and Eddie McClintock as Myka - Warehouse 13 (9%, 105 Votes)
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar as Faith and Eliza Dushku as Buffy - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (9%, 98 Votes)
  • Ben Browder as Aeryn and Claudia Black as Rygel - Farscape (8%, 90 Votes)
  • Joanne Kelly as Alice - Warehouse 13 (5%, 56 Votes)
  • Christopher Judge as Jack O'Neill and Richard Dean Anderson as Teal'c - Stargate SG-1 (4%, 47 Votes)
  • Colin Ferguson as Fargo, Zane, and Allison, Neil Grayston, Niall Matter, and Salli Richardson-Whitfield as Carter - Eureka (4%, 45 Votes)
  • Enver Gjokaj as Topher - Dollhouse (3%, 35 Votes)
  • Sam Trammell as Tommy and Luna - True Blood (2%, 28 Votes)
  • Mark Salling as Blaine - Glee (2%, 22 Votes)
  • Darren Criss as Puck - Glee (2%, 21 Votes)

BBC America to Co-Produce THE MUSKETEERS

The beloved tale of The Three Musketeers is headed to TV in 2014! Co-produced by BBC One and BBC America, The Musketeers will retain Dumas’ story’s original 17th century setting. Each of the 10 episodes will tell its own story, and it’s not certain how much of the original tale will make its way into the scripts.

Castle Spoilers — Plus Scoop on Community, CSI: NY, How I Met Your Mother and More! – TVLine

I’m a few days late posting this, but there are some amazing spoilers in the article linked below! (Read at your own risk!) My favorite tidbits include:

Castle possibly doing a murder at a sci-fi convention – I hope they bring in some great guest stars for this! Firefly reunion, anyone? Also, they’re planning a riff on The Office – hope they do a better job than last year’s attempt at the same thing by Leverage.

Barney and Robin will get engaged this season on How I Met Your Mother. The timing of their wedding, however, will probably be based on whether the show gets things figured out for a possible season 9.

How did I not hear about Bones’ all-squintern episode before this? It’s bound to be awesome!

Grimm Casts Josh Stewart in Season 2 – TVLine

Josh Stewart, who currently can be seen in theaters playing Bain’s second-in-command in The Dark Knight Rises, has scheduled a guest appearance on season 2 of Grimm. The film also features Reggie Lee, Grimm’s lovable Sgt. Wu, as Blake’s partner on the force.

Both Reggie Lee and Josh Stewart also reoccurred on NBC’s short-lived No Ordinary Family (they shared one memorable scene). This will make FOUR actors from No Ordinary Family who have appeared on Grimm  (almost thought it was five for a moment, with one Panabaker sister playing the mind-reading Daphne on NOF, and the other playing the fire-breathing Ariel on Grimm). Fan favorites Amy Gumenick (Supernatural) and Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse) have also guested on both shows.

TV Olympics: Favorite Dual Role

This round of the TV Olympics, we’re looking at dual roles in TV! Whether it’s distinct personae within the same being, or entirely different people, both are portrayed by the same actor for a number of episodes. Whether twins, clones, alternate dimensions, artificial memories, or hostile takeovers, these roles require excellent acting to pull off. Which are your favorites?

I know there are several great dual roles missing from this poll (seems to be a lack of space-set shows) – please let me know which ones in the comments! They should all be from live-action, scripted shows, and the dual role should be in at least several episodes. This shouldn’t be a temporary switched-body thing, where one actor plays a role typically portrayed by another actor – we’ll be doing that poll tomorrow!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite dual role? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Angel/Angelus (David Boreanaz) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (18%, 50 Votes)
  • Willow/Vampire Willow (Alyson Hannigan) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (12%, 34 Votes)
  • Snow White/Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) - Once Upon a Time (12%, 32 Votes)
  • Olivia/Fauxlivia (Anna Torv) - Fringe (11%, 31 Votes)
  • Fred/Illyria (Amy Acker) - Angel (11%, 30 Votes)
  • Elena/Katherine (Nina Dobrev) - The Vampire Diaries (8%, 21 Votes)
  • Buffy/Buffybot/The First (Sarah Michelle Gellar) - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (7%, 19 Votes)
  • Charming/David (Josh Dallas) - Once Upon a Time (6%, 17 Votes)
  • Bridget/Siobhan (Sarah Michelle Gellar) - Ringer (5%, 14 Votes)
  • Clark Kent/Kal-El (Tom Welling) - Smallville (5%, 13 Votes)
  • Mellie/November/Madeline (Miracle Laurie) - Dollhouse (4%, 10 Votes)
  • Tara/T/Buck/Alice/Gimme (Toni Collette) - United States of Tara (2%, 5 Votes)

Pilot Orders from Syfy, CBS, and more

Some cool and/or interesting pilot news has been revealed over the past week or so.

Most recently, Syfy has ordered a ninety-minute pilot from Pushing Daisies’ Bryan Fuller. Based on a 1969 science fiction novel, High Moon looks at a future where colonies have been established on the moon to mine its resources, and what happens when a new life form is discovered.

Syfy also has ordered a put pilot (a pilot contracted to make it onto TV, or the network will have to pay stiff penalties) from M. Night Shyamalan and Marti Noxon (best known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Proof focuses on the son of a billionaire tech genius who, after his parents’ passing, offers a huge reward for anyone who can provide proof of life after death.

CBS is looking at rebooting The Brady Bunch, with help from Vince Vaughn. The potential show (only a script has been ordered so far) would be a multi-camera comedy (which is one filmed on a soundstage, with live audience/laugh track) focusing on Bobby Brady (the youngest son in the original show), now a divorced and remarried father. His wife also has children from a previous relationship, and the two have one child together. The show will juggle both the blended family and issues with both of the couple’s exes.

CBS has also contracted former Community showrunner Dan Harmon for a multi-camera comedy script. This is in addition to Fox’s near-contact with him for another comedy, also likely multi-camera.

TV Olympics: Best Werewolf Effects and Rules

For this round of TV Breakroom’s Olympic event, we’re going to look at all the different variations of werewolves on TV! This poll is not only about the visual effects – transformation and full wolf – but also the werewolf mythology and rules within each story world. Do werewolves change only on the full moon, on the nights surrounding it, or whenever they please? What happens if they try to suppress the change? Can a werewolf make a human into a werewolf with just a scratch, or does it have to be a bite? Do they have to be in wolf form to do so? Or are werewolves only hereditary? Will a werewolf killed in wolf form revert to a human? How can they be killed?

Side note – I’ve been pondering the above questions recently as I’m working on writing a novel that includes scientifically-created werewolves. I plan to share more about this story and its deep connection to TV shows with you in the near future!

If there are any TV werewolves that I missed (and they appear in more than one episode of the show), please feel free to nominate them in the comments. Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options.

Which show has the best werewolf effects and rules? (Choose up to 3!)
