Grimm – Bad Teeth

I’ve started reviewing Grimm over on the TV show review site Billie Doux. I’m working on the current second season right now, though I do plan to go back and review season one, too.

Does anyone else absolutely hate the new intro for Grimm? It has a cool visual look, but the voiceover (both content and tone) and music is terrible. It’s a good idea to give new viewers a quick idea of what they’re in for, but did they have to make it sound so 90s?

Monroe: Cats don’t play possum, do they?

TV Duos: Wild Card Poll

In one week, we’ll launch our TV Duos bracket tournament, but first we have to select the 64 pairs of characters who will be competing for favorite TV duo! I’ve already selected 30-some pairs of characters from live-action scripted shows, but I need your input to select the rest!

To keep things fair, we are only including a maximum of two sets of duos from any one show, and no character will appear in the bracket twice. Because of that, this wild card poll will accomplish 3 things:

  • It will be the deciding vote between two duos that contain the same character, for example, whether Hawkeye from M*A*S*H will be paired with B.J. or Trapper John
  • When there are many pairings in one show, it will help me see which one(s) to include
  • It can tell me which shows to eliminate completely

This post also gives you one last chance to weigh in with any additional nominations. Look through both the list and the poll below, and if one of your favorite duos is missing, mention them in the comments! If they’re eligible, I’ll add them to either the confirmed list or the poll. (An ineligible nomination could be a duo with one character already in the confirmed list. For example, in Psych, you could nominate Shawn and Juliet as a duo, but since Shawn is already a part of the Shawn and Gus duo on the confirmed list, that nomination would be ineligible.)

Additional note: While there are romantic pairs in this bracket, that should be only one aspect of their relationship. Duos should have fun together, work well together, and/or have hilarious interactions.

Here, in no particular order, is the confirmed list for our TV Duos Bracket:

Pete and Myka – Warehouse 13
Troy and Abed – Community
Sherlock and Watson – Sherlock
Castle and Beckett – Castle
Booth and Brennan – Bones
Peter and Neal – White Collar
Shawn and Gus – Psych
Kensi and Deeks – NCIS: Los Angeles
McGarrett and Danno – Hawaii Five-O
Rizzoli and Isles – Rizzoli & Isles
Harvey and Mike – Suits
Nick and Monroe – Grimm
Max and Caroline – 2 Broke Girls
Liz and Jack – 30 Rock
Chuck and Sarah – Chuck
Annie and Auggie – Covert Affairs
Peter and Olivia – Fringe
House and Wilson – House
Benson and Stabler – Law & Order: SVU
Jane and Lisbon – The Mentalist
David and Maddie – Moonlighting
Reese and Finch – Person of Interest
Kirk and Spock – Star Trek
Dean and Sam – Supernatural
Mulder and Scully – The X-Files
Lorelai and Rory – Gilmore Girls
Leonard and Sheldon – The Big Bang Theory
Hardison and Eliot – Leverage
Walter and Leo – The Finder
Nikita and Michael – Nikita
Laverne and Shirley – Laverne and Shirley
Robin and Much – Robin Hood
Klink and Schultz – Hogan’s Heroes
Meredith and Derek – Grey’s Anatomy
Tony and Ziva – NCIS
Merlin and Arthur – Merlin

Now vote for which ones I should add to reach our final list of 64! Remember, not all of the top vote-receivers will make it in, as two-duos-max-per-show and character-can-only-appear-once rules still apply. This poll will be open for one week, and you can vote for up to 10 duos!

Which TV duos should make it into our bracket tournament? (Choose up to 10!)

Supernatural – Home

Okay, I’d heard this was a good episode, and it was one of the better ones I’ve seen so far, but as it ended I felt rather ambivalent. What, really, has changed?

This episode, thanks to one of Sam’s prescient dreams, takes the brothers back to Kansas, where a mother and her two young children have just moved into the boys’ childhood home. Early creepy indications include scratching noises and the sighting of a figure wreathed in flames.

Dean and Sam make some inquiries around town and finally meet with a no-nonsense female psychic who knew their father. Missouri’s presence in the episode shows again how hard it is to connect to a show when there are only two main characters. She made a good addition to the team for the episode, and made me wish for a consistent third character to liven up the relationship dynamics.

Okay, after watching this episode and the Heroes pilot, I am going to have a lifelong fear of garbage disposals. The monkey with the cymbals was pretty clichéd, though.

I figured out early on that flame-figure was Mary Winchester, thanks to coming across spoilers while verifying facts for polls. So that part of the episode didn’t have the impact on me that it could have. And seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s name in the credits let me know that good ol’ dad would be showing up at some point – unfortunately it was in a closing scene with Missouri, so no family reunion just yet. Plus his excuse for not seeing his sons seems incredibly lame. There’d better be a good reason for why seeking this “truth” is keeping him apart from his sons when it didn’t for the first 20 years after the fire. Especially after Dean’s phone call to him, which was some of the best acting I’ve seen on this show so far, by Jensen Ackles or anyone else.

And so Dean and Sam faced their fears, went back home, and saved the day – but what do they have to show for it? Yeah, it was cool that they saw their mom, but a) they already knew she was dead, and b) they already were pretty sure she loved them. It’s interesting that we as viewers now know that John Winchester isn’t locked in some hell dimension, but his sons don’t know. So as far as I can see, nothing changes. Maybe I’m just too used to Joss Whedon shows, but after a pivotal episode like that, isn’t something (even if it’s a tiny shift in a relationship or a new fear a character will have to overcome) supposed to be different?

Well, there is the fact that now Dean knows about Sam’s dreams. Would have been nice to touch on that near the end. But I guess I’ll have to see if this episode has much of an impact on later ones.

Alphas: New Time, Lookbook, and Episode 5 Previews

This second season of Alphas has been amazing so far! (Not watching the show yet? Get caught up by entering to win the first season on DVD!) Now, Syfy is airing the show at 8PM on Mondays, as well as its normal 10PM slot, bookending the quirky Warehouse 13.

Syfy has released TWO previews for the August 20th episode, “Gaslight.” In my opinion, the second preview gives a little too much away, so you may want to skip it. (I haven’t seen the episode yet, so it might not be that bad, but in any case, it’s a very odd sort of spoiler.) Update: Not a spoiler at all, just a very delayed memorial service. I wanted to make sure it didn’t mean a character was somehow still alive and then later died in this episode.

Also, Lauren Holly (pictured above, best known for playing NCIS Director Jenny Sheppard) makes her first appearance on the show in this episode, as Senator Charlotte Burton, a government official with mysterious ties to Dr. Rosen.

One more cool thing: Syfy has created a digital lookbook, featuring 8 Alpha abilities. Click on it below for a fullscreen version, complete with video clips.

Supernatural – Bugs

I went into watching this episode expecting it to be terrible (perhaps remembering Smallville’s cringe-worthy bug episode of its first season), but to my surprise it wasn’t half bad. I even laughed a few times, including when Dean stuck his towel-wrapped head out of the bathroom.

One of the things that made me enjoy the episode was getting some backstory on Sam’s relationship with his dad. Even though it was presented awkwardly (come on, writers, this isn’t the 80s), it really gave me a better idea of how the brothers relate.

Since the description gave away that a Native American burial ground had something to do with the bug attacks, I had the Buffy episode “Pangs” in my head the entire time, but the two didn’t have all that much in common. I did think the much more specific curse on “Bugs” made an interesting difference. (And now I have an arrow-riddled Spike yelling, “A bear! You made a bear! Undo it, undo it!” going on a constant loop in my head.)

I really disliked how the final attack was supposed to be 6 hours long (a little after midnight until dawn), and yet the way it was shot it seemed like a half hour at most. It made the sunrise seem like a cop-out.

All in all, while “Bugs” was a little corny in places, it was much better than the last episode, and is giving me a little hope for the show.

‘Perception’ Renewed by TNT – Ratings | TVbytheNumbers

Good news for Perception fans! The freshman drama has been renewed by TNT for a second 13-episode season.

No news on what that means for other TNT shows that are yet to be renewed – most notably Franklin & Bash and Leverage.

Are you a fan of Perception? Do you think the show deserves this renewal?

Supernatural – Hook Man

So, it’s been almost exactly a year since I last watched an episode of Supernatural. I gave the show six episodes in the summer of 2011, and it failed to impress me. But since many of this site’s visitors love the show, and I’ve caught several cool moments (and unfortunately far too many spoilers) while doing research for polls, I decided to give it another shot. Especially since it’s now on Netflix.

Sadly, “Hook Man” was a rather terrible episode to try and get me into the show. Basic premise: an angry spirit with a hook for a hand goes around killing people, and Dean and Sam have to risk their lives to stop him (yes, quite similar to other episodes). Far too much of the episode was taken up with “scary atmosphere,” there was only one major twist I could see coming a mile away, and please tell me getting picked up/questioned by law enforcement doesn’t become an every-other-episode part of this show. I didn’t recognize any of the guest stars, though apparently the minister (Dan Butler) is from Frasier.

Dean and Sam were a little less awkward together in the episode, but still have a long way to go. With Supernatural hinging so greatly on their relationship (as the show’s one constant), it has to sizzle. A few of the later clips I’ve seen indicate that it eventually does (one of the reasons why I tried another episode), but I don’t know how much I’m willing to watch to get to better episodes.

It probably doesn’t help that I’ve seen so many other speculative shows that early episodes of Supernatural pale in comparison. Buffy, Angel, and Grimm all started with a similar “baddie of the week” setup, yet their main characters are far more engaging, there are more plot twists, and fun dialogue makes you laugh.

I did like how this episode showed Sam (yes, I still want to call him Dean – thanks, Gilmore Girls!) connecting with someone and showing how Jess’s death is still affecting him. But it’s still painted too broadly – this show could use more nuance. I wonder if that’s why it’s so popular internationally – less subtlety prevents things from getting lost in translation.

Another part I enjoyed was Dean and Sam falling on each other after climbing in a window, as well as Dean’s remarks about Sam’s college life (and his choice of caffeinated beverage).

But I still don’t get why thousands of teen girls and young women are so into these guys. Give me Spike, Monroe, or Wesley any day (or Giles, Xander, Oz, Angel, Nick, Captain Renard, Doyle . . . yeah, the Winchester boys would be pretty far down on the list – and that’s only looking at 3 other shows at the moment).

Wibiya – A Quick Intro to TV Breakroom’s New Social Bar

If you’ve visited TV Breakroom recently via a computer, you may have noticed the new toolbar at the bottom of the page (it doesn’t appear on mobile browsers – at least for the ones I’ve tried). I added it to be helpful to all the wonderful people who stop by this site, and to my surprise, I’ve been using it quite frequently myself!

A few of the buttons on the social bar are a little cryptic, so I figured I’d give a quick rundown of all the features. Several of these options are also found on the sidebars of the site, but with long pages, they can sometimes require some scrolling to find. With this Wibiya social bar, they are always visible.

Below is a list of the features currently active on the toolbar (they may change slightly at a later date), in order. All should be visible unless your browser window is less than 1000 pixels wide.

My Bookmarks – This allows you to bookmark your favorite pages on TV Breakroom, and you’ll be able to access them from any site that has a Wibiya social bar, including any page on this site. It’s very useful if you plan to return to a page often, such as our Alphas giveaway page, so you can easily tweet about the giveaway and earn two extra entries every day. Or you can save one of our poll posts to see if your favorite show is still winning in a few days.

Random – Bored? Want to get a quick sample of what TV Breakroom is like? Click the random button to let the toolbar decide where you land next. You could come across one of this site’s founding blog posts, a casting news article for a show that’s now your favorite, or a review of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode (yes, I’m slowly reviewing every single episode from that show).

Share – This one’s pretty easy: it lets you share your current page on several social networks, as well as emailing or printing the post. (There are also links to share a post at the bottom of each one – right before the comments – but they’re a bit hard to spot. They do offer a few more options, though.) This button also powers the “click to share” option you’ll sometimes see come up when you mouse over a larger image.

Like – This lets you like whatever page of the site you are on on Facebook. It shows up under your activity on Facebook Timeline (if you’re signed in). If you want it to show up as an actual shared link on Facebook (with the image and ability to add your own comment), use the Facebook option in Share instead.

Pin It – You can pin one of the photos from your current page on Pinterest with this button. Since it pulls every image on the page as suggestions, the main image from the post ends up near the end of the list, but in most cases, that’s the one you’ll want to pin.

Tweet – This will pop up a Twitter box with (if it doesn’t prompt you to sign in first) a prefilled tweet containing the page title, link, and a #wibiya hashtag. You can edit this tweet as much as you’d like before posting, including removing the hashtag.

G +1 – This lets you +1 the site on Google+ – though its info pull doesn’t work as well as Facebook’s. Often you have to scroll to get the right picture, and the description is sometimes for a different TV Breakroom page.

Search – Perform a search right from the toolbar. The default TV Breakroom search is identical to the search box in the top right corner of the site. You can also switch to a Google search.

Select Language – This is one of the primary reasons I added a social bar to this site. TV Breakroom gets a large amount of international traffic, and while Google translate isn’t perfect, it can be very helpful for visitors who don’t speak English as a first language.

Facebook – This pops up a quick snapshot of TV Breakroom’s Facebook Page. You can like us on Facebook (please do!), see our followers and latest updates, and post a comment on our wall.

Twitter – This opens a Twitter dashboard. You can tweet about the page you’re currently on (the tweet box contains a shortened link to the page – no copy/paste required), see the latest tweets about the page, view my latest tweets, search for my username, and follow me on Twitter.

Join Chat – This opens a chat box where you can sign in with one of various networks (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and Yahoo) and chat with others who are on the site at that very moment.

Scroll Arrow – This arrow button scrolls you to the top of a page with a single click.

The far right buttons link to the Wibiya site and their privacy page, and the very last button allows you to minimize the toolbar.

I previously tried using BumpIn’s social bar on this site, but after several frustrating difficulties, I switched to Wibiya, and couldn’t be happier. I do miss a few of BumpIn’s cosmetic options, but having Facebook links and a chat box that work far outweigh not having a partly see-through social bar.

There are other buttons I could add to this social bar, but to do so I would need to remove some of the current buttons. I’m going to be keeping up with how often the current buttons are used to see if I need to make any changes in the future.

What do you think? Is this social bar something that you’ll use? Have you tried it out already? Which buttons do you think you might use regularly? Are there certain options you don’t think you’ll ever use?

Submit Your Favorite Screenshots for TV Breakroom’s Twitter!

It’s been a while since I updated my Twitter backgrounds, and this time, I’d like your help! Submit your favorite screenshots from TV episodes in the comments, and I’ll choose 12 for my background collage! (If there are tons of excellent ones, I may use different ones for my @waterfallbooks and @TVBreakroom accounts, which would mean 24 total!)

Some quick ground rules:

  • Images must be G-rated. I’m looking for funny and dramatic screenshots, not sensual or graphic ones. Inappropriate photos will cause the comment’s deletion and multiple offenses will cause you to be restricted from commenting.
  • Cast photos are allowed, but I’d prefer stills from actual episodes.
  • Animated gifs won’t work for the background, so they are excluded.
  • Don’t reveal key spoilers for newer shows in your photo.
  • You can submit one photo a day until I close the comments of this post.

How do you leave a photo in a comment? Use this code: [img src=”” width=400] Replace the brackets: [ ] with this kind: < > and << this isn’t working for some reason, so just paste the image’s location (url, will look something like: http://www.website.com/image.jpg) between the two quotation marks in the comment and I’ll edit the code. If you can’t figure it out, feel free to email me the image, but you’ll miss out on one cool part of this event:

Commenting on each other’s photos! Photos which get a lot of comments are more likely to make it onto the Twitter background. Only comment on the photos you like, as your comment is essentially you voting for that photo. To leave a proper reply, hit the little gray reply box beneath the photo, and after the page loads, leaving a comment in the normal comment box will post as a threaded reply to the original photo comment.

If you’d like to include your Twitter username with your photo in your comment, I’ll publicly thank you on Twitter if your selected image makes it into the background!

TV Olympics: Favorite Cast-Performed Song

Today launches our final mini-poll event, cast-performed songs! A week from today we’ll tally the medals and see who won the 2012 TV Olympics! The current top shows only have 6-8 medals so this is still very much any show’s game!

If you have more nominations for this poll, please leave them in the comments! Songs should be from scripted live-action shows, and be performed (at least in part) by cast members. Lip-synching (sorry, Supernatural fans who nominated “Eye of the Tiger”) and guest star only performances aren’t eligible. We’re also excluding songs from all-musical shows like Glee and Smash (there would simply be too many options).

Since this poll focuses on musical performances, I’ve created a playlist for the songs that I could find on YouTube. Of course the quality of the videos will vary, with some being lyrics or photos only, and there were several I was unable to find (also, several won’t embed). Listen for help in making this very hard choice!

I will make it a little easier on you, though: Since this is the final poll of the event, you can select 10 options instead of the usual 3!

This poll will be open for one week, and remember, you can choose up to 10 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

What's your favorite cast-performed song? (Choose up to 10!)

TV Olympics: Favorite Hero/Villain Performance

In this penultimate round of the TV Olympics, we’re looking at actors who have excelled at playing both heroes and villains. Two distinct roles in two different shows were nominated, and now, based on those two performances, it’s time for you to judge which actor embraced their good guy and bad guy sides best.

I know there could have been other roles nominated for these actors, but I went with your suggestions – Nathan Fillion was nominated for Firefly, not Castle, and Jensen Ackles had more votes for Dark Angel than Smallville. There’s still room to nominate additional actors who have played both heroes and villains, but both roles must be on different TV shows (no movies), and the actor should be a main cast member in at least one of those shows.

Tomorrow, the final mini-poll event, cast-performed songs (nominate away, but avoid all-musical shows), will launch, and a week from then we will tally the medals and see who won the 2012 TV Olympics! The current top shows only have 6-8 medals so this is still very much any show’s game!

This poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 options. Please spread the word so your favorites will win medals, and be sure to vote in all our current Olympic polls!

TV Olympics: Favorite Mom/Daughter Duo

For this round of our TV Olympics (just 2 more rounds left!), we’re looking at mother/daughter duos! While they seem to be a bit more rare on TV than any of our previous duos, there are several distinct shows that feature strong mother/daughter pairs (Gilmore Girls has two of them!).

This poll is for actual mothers (not mother-figures), and since the relationship between mom and daughter is a key part of the poll, they need to have appeared in a number of episodes together, and infant daughters are excluded. There were only a few nominations for this poll, so if you know of any duos you believe should be added, please leave their names and the show in a comment!

Poll will be open for one week, and you can choose up to 3 of your favorite mother/daughter duos. Remember to keep checking the main event page for all the current polls and results!

What's your favorite mother/daughter duo? (Choose up to 3!)

  • Ellen and Jo - Supernatural (22%, 139 Votes)
  • Jackie and Rose - Doctor Who (17%, 106 Votes)
  • Amy and River - Doctor Who (14%, 87 Votes)

FX Picks Up Keri Russell Drama The Americans – TVLine

The premise for this show sounds so cool! From TVLine:

The ambitious project, from Joe Weisberg (Falling Skies) and Graham Yost (Justified), is set in the early ’80s and centers on two KGB spies, Phillip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell), posing as married Americans in suburban DC. Despite their arranged union, the couple’s bond grows more passionate and genuine by the day, but is constantly tested by the escalation of the Cold War. Tensions also heighten upon the arrival of a new neighbor, Stan (Noah Emmerich), an FBI agent working in counter intelligence.

I barely knew what FX was before hearing about this show, and it will be the first show ever that I’ll check out on Fox’s cable network.
